A Thoughtful Child

Yes, we all like to brag on our kids every so often, or when we can. I think it's all part of being a parent. It's almost a given right to us to be able to do so. Me and my youngest son have a little game we play. When he was younger and I would go shopping, his first question was 'What did you buy me?' Yes, most kids do that. He was 40% joking when he would do this. Now that he is grown and has a job, the tables have turned. When he comes home from shopping, I now ask him this question. Jokingly mind ya. The thing is. about 7 out of 10 times he did buy me something. Nothing big or expensive. Usually a new type of candy, a candle, or some small trinket. Saturday he went to the grocery store to buy ingredients to make a new dish. This is something he does every Saturday (he tries his hand at creating a new dish). He loves to cook. Yes, he gets it from his mom. Anyways, I had been laying down and when I got up, he was in the kitchen prepping food to cook. So being the mom that I am, I had to see what he was doing, so I walked into the kitchen and on the counter in my glass vase was a dozen sunflowers. Yes, when he was at the grocery store, he bought me a 'bunch' of sunflowers. Those pre-cut ones that most grocery stores carry. I was quite touched that he bought them. I thought oh what a 'thoughtful child'. Yes, I will remain to think that, and not think he might have felt guilty for given me the flu to start with. Are your kids thoughtful like that? Will they do little things like that just out of the blue, with no real reason for it?

Loved reading this. Every word of it. My problem - not many like what I get them. Never mind, I am happy that I remember to bring something for them whenever I go out.

Well, thank you. That was very kind of you to say. Well, my youngest was never picky. He was happy with a pack of gum, you would get at the check out counter. It was always the thought that counted with him. I think that is why the game has continued even now that he is 22.

@TexanTornado My belief is that these habits are inculcated during the growing up years and if the kids receive the love parents give them, they continue returning back the love they have accumulated for the parents. And also another factor is the appreciation. If you as a parent (or even anyone for whom a gift is being brought in) would not appreciate the gifts your children get for you, over time, the interest would die off or even if not die off, it would get diminished.

@thesids You are absolutely right on both counts. I have always been one who appreciates the small things in life, and I guess my son is the same way. I tried teaching them, that it is always the thought behind it that matters.

You've got the bragging rights with a son like that. That is so sweet of him to get you sunflowers. I agree that there is nothing like a sunflower to brighten up my mood.. My beautiful sunflower got washed out in the rain.. I hoped to get picture of it before the rains.. but that was not to be.

Yes, I was quite touched by the gesture. Not sure what it is about sunflowers, but they do have a way of bringing a smile. Oh no. So you will have to plant another one?

@sofssu Yes, that it is. I don't know what every time I see a sunflower, I see a smiley face in the middle of it. Oh well, that is great. Will have to go look at it. Not sure if I seen it yet or not. They seem to be a tough flower..

@TexanTornado It was indeed a touching gesture and a thoughtful one too. It does bring a smile ... its one of those happy flowers. I was wrong about the flowers being washed out in the rain. the flowers were intact and I posted a picture of it in my post. I hadn't gone up to the terrace because of the non stop rain.. I ran up when there was a let up in the rain. I was so happy to see the flowers smiling strong in the wind and the rain.

That is so sweet! Yes, my children have always been very sweet to me (just don't tell Phyrre I said that or we will both deny it). My youngest is so excited every Spring when the first bunch of flowers come up in the yard, and she always rushes out when she spots the first ones to go pick them and bring them in for me. She does this all Summer long and gets depressed in the Fall when she can't do it any more. Then, she tries to find some pretty leaves to give me. Unfortunately, they do not last like flowers, and they crumble on the table in no time. Still, it is the beautiful thought that counts.

@TexanTornado The little one has always had an obsession with leaves - it started when she was just a baby and she would love to go for walks and look around at all the leaves. She absolutely loved it in the fall when all the leaves turned colors. As soon as she could walk, she would run (or toddle) around the yard collecting as many leaves as she could.

Ok, my lips are sealed, I will never tell Phyrre. Awww that is so adorable. She sounds like a sweet, caring child. Who is quite thoughtful. Yes, the leaves don't last at all. You need to build her a greenhouse.

@purplealabaster That is too cute. I betcha she was absolutely adorable. Now the different color leaves can be an attraction for so many people, but being that young makes it seem more serene.

Yes, it is very sweet of him. Out of the 7 he is the only one that lives here. The others are 6-10 hours away. So I guess you can say we spoil each other.

What a sweet Son you have!!..so jealous. When mine were younger and thought of me more, (now they have families and i come last) I would get letters, little trinkets and things done around the house But my oldest daughter close to your age did 2 days ago buy me 2 new outfits and my younger daughter brought me a candy bar yesterday so i guess my daughters still care!

He truly is a great kid. Well, he still lives at homes so I guess that does make a difference. Although the rest of the kids do call to check up on us, and sends us cards/gifts for the holidays. Oh now, that was sweet of your daughters. See they still love you, and think about you. You had have raised them right.

My kids sure are. By 'my kids' I mean my daughter and her two kids which I have helped to raise. All three of them always bring me something. My grandson just now shared his popsicle with me. When they were young and we would get them a treat they always shared it with us or at least asked if we'd like some. Always so nice.

Awww isn't that sweet. Evidently you raised your daughter right and in turn she is bringing up some fine kids. Small things like that can be so heart warming.

That was very nice of him. It is good to have a thoughtful child. My older boys don't think along those lines. They do things such as work on my vehicle or move furniture for me but nothing along the lines of buying flowers etc, unless it is a holiday.

My oldest son wouldn't even do that. Now the rest of the kids are all quite thoughtful. It's just me and youngest have this bond, and it's like a game for us. Matter of fact he went to NY over the weekend and brought me back a dream catcher, (a small one, the kind you hang on the review mirror of your car).
