95 and coming to the end...

My Mother-In-Law is 95 and recently broke her hip. She went through surgery fine, considering her age. After the hospital they sent her to a rehab and from there she started going downhill further. She developed a kidney infection. Last night my husband's brother called to say it won't be long. He white count is off badly and she is now under hospice care. He doesn't think she'll make it to Christmas. Many doctors have stated, once an older person breaks a hip it's the beginning of the end.... Now we wait.

I was astonished at the mortality rate for people over 65 who break a hip. They have a hard time tolerating the surgery and treatment. No matter how long a person lives, it never seems like we have them with us long enough. I still miss my father and grandparents.

She's been on the downswing for years. She lived in her own home but they hired a companion to live there to keep an eye on her basially.

Unfortunately, elderly people who break hips do have a high mortality rate. I am sorry. I hope it will be a comfortable transition. Hospice is a very helpful service.

There is something in what doctors say,the old people would be bedridden which causes a lot of problems after breaking a hip.My Mum is 94 now ,can gets about but has a problem with sleep and time perception .

I am so sorry, at this age it's hard to survive a surgery.

She survived the surgery fine - she was up and walking, fell again and did no damage..then the kidney infection started and went downhill from that.

@AbbyGreenhill It is incredible, the medicine advanced so much in the centuries, but people are still killed by the same enemy "infection", as it was in the 1800.

Thanks. She had been falling quite a lot before that fall. We didn't think they would operate on at 95.

I've heard this too. I'm sorry your mother-in-law is so sick. My mother had a hip replacement at 99, then had a hairline fracture of the pelvis but she got going again and lived to 104.
