Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus

This book came up in my discussion about my marriage. It reminds me of an old joke. Why are women from Venus? Because Venus is the brightest. Anyway, I mentioned that there is a follow-up book which people were unaware of. I decided to look up the title and found there are several follow-up books. Mars and Venus in the Bedroom Mars and Venus Starting Over Mars and Venus Together Forever Why Mars and Venus Collide Mars and Venus on a Date A Summary of Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus: Truly Mars and Venus The are all written by John Gray who wrote the first book. As I also mentioned there is a helpful book called The 5 Love Languages. I have also read Dr. Phil's book Relationship Rescue. I wish I had time to read all of them.

I have read Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, and it was a good book. However, I never like to see anyone (men or women) stereotyped into certain categories. After awhile, we start to believe what we see and hear, otherwise known as labeling. Each and every one of us is a unique individual, and we all act and react in our individual ways. With that being said, I still loved the book, and think it very accurately described how many men and women act and behave! Oh, and the Five Love Languages is a great book as well!

You are correct. No one knows what I have to live with when it comes to my husband's lifestyle and no one knows what he has to live with when it comes to my illness. They are in a category of their own.

I did a post about the original book once and said that John Gray had a lot to answer for. Once Viince read the book, I went from being given a block of chocolate to just a small chocolate bar as the book had said a small gift was appreciated as much as a large gift to a women. But he got it wrong when it came to chocolate.

Do you feel that reading this material really helps you? I know that several things that I read about are good, in my mind, or on my shelf. I do not always put them into practice.

So-so. I read them so long ago I don't remember any of it. Mars and Venus I borrowed from a neighbour so I can't go back and look at it. Dr. Phil's book is close by but I haven't looked at it in ages. It would be nice if we, as a couple, could both read the books and put the ideas into play.

I have heard of the book and I think that it's true that men and women often think differently. But on a gut, emotional level, I am not sure that "understanding" that we think differently is going to change our reactions to one another very much.

I agree with that. All men are not the same either. A lot has to do with upbringing and the role models they lived with (parents). My husband's parents lived a very different marriage than my parents and therefore he thinks he doesn't have to make an effort and I feel my expectations bar was set way high by my father.

I read the first one, and made my husband read it too. I agreed with most of it. I felt like it summed me and my husband up pretty good. Unfortunately it didn't change any behaviors around here.

I didn't either. I knew there was one more but when I checked Amazon and saw all those books I was surprised.

@JudyEv Doesn't everybody do that? Look at the Chicken Soup books. There are hundreds of different categories, and categories repeated. The Book of Awesome author did the same thing and came up with another book. I think there is more Don't Sweat The Small Stuff too.

@patgalca I guess he thought he'd take advantage of the popularity of the books and churn out a few more. I enjoyed the first.

I have heard of the book but never needed help with my marriage. We knew we were different but we shared what we could and respected the rest, I remember one time when I invited one of our best friends at the time of a World Soccer Cup. The men were in the bedroom and they had a wonderful time relating as monkeys do while Lili and I were in the living room talking. Every now and then we went to throw them snacks. They did not word a "thank you". It wasn´t in their vocabulary

I have heard of the book but i have never read it wasn't really sure what exactly they were about. i always kind of thought that they were about the differences between men and woman but from the titles its more like the differences and relationships between men and woman possibly how to strengthen them.

I read the first couple of John Gray's books, then donated them to the local library. I did not find them helpful at all. In my opinion, he was parroting ideas he had heard about but had never put into practice himself. Oh well, not every author is for every reader.
