My Pet Duck Named Wibble Wobble

When I first joined this site I posted a photo and a story about my husband smoking ducks. It was called Smoked Duck.
I put it on Facebook and my friend nicknamed Duckie blew a gasket about eating ducks. She made me laugh out loud. This post will go on Facebook too and she will know I do sometimes care about ducks...
When I was eight years old we moved from the city to the country. My first pet was a cat. Her name was "momma puddy" because she was pregnant when we got her.
My second pet was a duck I called Wibble Wooble. I was eight and I thought that was a great name for a duck that wibbled and wobbled around our little farm.
Even before we moved to the country my parents built a chicken coop for our summer cottage. It was big with a large screened porch on one end and it became our home for that summer. Our real house was under construction. When we moved into the real house that fall, the chickens moved into the house we just left.
We had several ducks that summer and Wibble Wobble was my favorite. She laid eggs and sat on them for a while. Like magic we had ducklings.
I worried because we didn't have a pond for the ducks to swim in so my dad let me use his wheelbarrow for their pool.
We placed a board for a walkway and soon Wibble Wobble and her babies were happily playing in the water.
I think I was pretty creative for an eight year old.
I hope you enjoy my photo. The year was 1953 and back then life was simple.
I also want you to know that Wibble Wobble lived a long life and we didn't eat her.

I love that you are a Duckie too. I did post a similar post on the other site. I edited it to fit why I wanted to post it here.

What a great idea for a pool. It was also great of your dad to allow it.

My dad was all for anything we kids wanted to do. When he needed the wheel barrow he just dumped the water and then refilled when he was done. We went on to the cement bin, I'm not sure what its called but it was about 10 inches deep and probably 8 x10 feet - cement was mixed in it and moved to where cement was needed in the building of the house. When it was not in use we could fill it up with water when the ducks got bigger so they had their own pool. I can't find any photos of that or I'd share one...

@PainsOnSlate we keep a variety of containers around the place as drinking spots for the roos and birds. The deeper ones have a log in them with one end leaning against the side so any birds that fall in can clamber out. This was after I had to rescue a kookaburra that fell in a trough and couldn't get out.

@JudyEv I remember a song we sang as children about kookaburra and we had no idea what that was. Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Merry, merry king of the bush is he
Laugh, Kookaburra! Laugh, Kookaburra!
Gay your life must be

Wibble Wobble is a good and cute name! My children would be really excited if they saw the ducks swimming in the wheelbarrow. How nice your dad was to let the ducks swim inside. I think back in those days, kids were more creative too.
How I wish I am staying in the village, so we can have ducks and chickens, and even rabbits running around. I can imagine you have a wonderful childhood time!

@PainsOnSlate Yes, I agree with that. I am trying to let my children get near or play in the nature as much as possible, though we are living in the city. Glad that there's a big park in my neighborhood, though it's artificial, it's better than none.

@kaka135 I've always enjoyed parks and took my children to them often when they were young. Have fun with those children, they grow up so fast.

So glad Wibble Wobble had a long and fun life. I miss Daisy and Donald so much. They were always so fun to watch.

@PainsOnSlate We had two Peking ducks. We named them Donald and Daisy. I loved watching them. They were like a little old married couple. Daisy was full steam ahead and always quacking. Donald trailed along behind her and would dip his head once in a while and let out one little quack as if agreeing with her. It was so funny to watch them.

Great story, and I'm pleased you didn't eat her
although that reminds me of a lad I used to go out with whose father had once cooked and eating his daughter's rabbit

How does a father do that? Unless we were starving, pets were off limits. Glad you enjoyed the story

That would never happen at my house, they were pets, not food. We did raise chickens to eat and our parents let us know ahead of time not to get attached because they were going to be food.

@JudyEv I agree, our lambs just disappeared and we never knew we ate them...

@PainsOnSlate We never ate pets either. Friends of ours slaughtered their pet sheep which I thought was very traitorous (is that a word?). Anyway it was a terrible breach of faith.

I've never eaten duck, I hear it's greasy. I've never owned a duck either. Ducklings are adorable... but we have a dog so I don't think ducklings would be safe here.

The ducks wouldn't be safe if the dog came first, If the ducks came first they would rule the roost.

That is so sweet and the ducks are so cute, we had ducks and geese too when I was a child, the geese were mean.

I agree, the geese were big enough to scare the daylights out of us kids.

I doubt it, but some must have farmers as parents or like me, parents willing to do anything to make life interesting and better... Today is not even close to the 1950's but because I remember those years I wish more kids could experience life without all the comforts of home today.

That was certainly creative and would have been really appreciated by Wibble Wobble and her little family. We had a pet turkey named Turk (duh) and he would play hide and seek with us. At least we'd hide and he'd huffle around until he found us. He never ever showed any viciousness. Mum used to give him a cuddle and he'd look very embarrassed. He was a great pet so I can empathise with you and Wibble Wobble.

What a fitting name for a duck. I am glad she had a good life and didn't get eaten.
