A Thousand White Geese

It looked to be a thousand white geese, spiraling, circling,
Down to the ground
The sky was a confetti celebration
An open field their landing location.
Converting clouds to a snow globe scene
Snow geese on the ground
Dark sky sending them to rest
Snow geese headed south to nest.
-------------------------------------------------------
We saw these birds as we drove back to town to do some shopping around 4:30. The sun was setting. Until last year I had never noticed snow geese here. Research tells me that at one point they had neared extinction but have returned so well that they are seen all over the contiguous United States. Once thought to be a totally separate breed it is now known that the snow goose is a morph of the blue goose.
Whatever they are called, it was impressive to see them circling in huge numbers before landing on an empty corn field to rest for the night and perhaps to find food for their flight.

They were so awesome to see, then when I looked them up online the entry perfectly described it. It made me want to just park and watch them.

I am being privileged to see more open skies and beautiful creatures. I hear that we have Bald Eagles near here.

I will have to look for that book, yes, it was nice to hear that something did not disappear but repopulate.

They call anything more than two crows a murder of crows, I have heard. I am accustomed to seeing starlings doing what is called a murmuration, where they take off simultaneously and sweep in flight patterns across the sky.

Yes, it makes the drive much more interesting, thanks. Hubby kept saying "I have never seen anything quite like this".
