My beautiful new poinsettia

I wasn't going to buy my poinsettia plant until the middle of the month but while I was shopping I saw this beauty for £2.50 and had to have it. I need to get a new pot for it as the standard black one it came in doesn't really do the plant justice - the colours are just about perfect with the red/green ratio looking very healthy. I read something on the wrapping that I didn't know, apparently poinsettias need 12 hours of darkness each day to help encourage the redness to come through - while online checking if this was true (it is) I found a fab page which I've bookmarked giving me a step by step guide on pruning and re-planting it for next year. I don't mind buying one but I might try keeping it alive through the year and using it again for Christmas 2016 - or I might not bother, I can't even grow bloomin' cress in an eggshell! Does anyone else buy poinsettia plants each year, or do you grow your own? (Oh. My piccie is sideways...)

Any plants I buy never last too long either. My heart sinks if I'm given a plant as a gift.

I grow my own an d gift them to others. You just need to take the cuttings after you prune your pant and stick them in the dirt you will soon have a few hundred plants to give away too.

I really love how you make it sound so easy! Surely there is more to it than just sticking them in the dirt. But my Mum could grow anything that way too.

Yes, I remember a co-worker telling me that she took her poinsettia into the study at night and left it there over night and then brought it out in the morning. She had hers for several years. I hope yours works out for you.

Your poinsettia is beautiful. I didn't know they needed 12 hrs of darkness to keep them bright and red

How beautiful it is ! There should be a pot that sits well on your poinsettia .I haven't grown it , because it can't suffer a cold winter and doesn't grow well below 15 C.

When my mother was alive, she had fake red poinsettias around for every Christmas season. Since she passed away, I think I've thrown out that decoration last year. I know my church has them this time of year.

I don't know anyone who can grow cress in an eggshell! What a wonderful saying. I haven't heard that before.
