I Never Would Have Thought I Would Love History

When I was in school, history was one of my worst subjects with math being on the top. I didn't care about history as it all seemed like having to memorize dates and such. Never in a million years would I have thought that now I would love it. I was more interested in science and biology. Although I still like science and biology, I love any and everything that has to do with history. I love reading and learning all about different eras, people and how they lived and it really surprises me at times. I wish I had this same interest when I was in school but it just goes to show how things can change over the years. Do you love history as well? Do you have a part of history that is your favorite?

When I was at school the subjects seemed so boring, I'm sure it was the teachers' fault. They just didn't make things interesting. I hated both geography and history at school, but love them both now.

@jaboUK I agree that it was the teachers fault. In our school, history was taught by the really mean and bitter woman. She wasn't a good teacher at all.

I dropped geography in Year 11 (about 16 years old) and failed history up until the last exam which I somehow managed to pass. I enjoy them both much more now.

I use to love history when I was home in France. But then when I had to go to school in the US it seemed so different. I didn't much care for this subject at all. But my all time favorite subject was math. I loved this and art.

@poehere I never did care for math. It was top on my list of things I hated in school. I guess I just never understood some of the concepts and it was never really explained to me so that I could understand.

History certainly has become more meaningful to me over the years. I passed it once in two years but that was for the final exam when it counted most.

I love history, but I always did. I did not enjoy studying it in elementary school. I think that is mostly because they barely skimmed the surface. It was dumbed down history, that they thought kids could handle. I did always enjoy reading books about history. I guess my favorite part is the California gold rush.

@Rollo1 Lol...I have had teachers like that. My history teacher was mean and grumpy all of the time. It was like she hated kids and I often wondered why she became a teacher. Maybe she just became disillusioned over the years.

I like history, but I do not like examination. I think the stress of facing tests and examinations take the joy out of learning. When I read about history, I try to imagine the real persons living, and why they made choices as they had.

I didn't like history, math, or science (I loved English) but I think it depends on the teacher. Like I took a Geology class last winter/spring semester and I only liked the last part where we went on field trips, I hated the lecture and lab, I didn't understand it. This semester, I am taking Geology I (I had to take 2 science classes for my degree) and I absolutely LOVE this class. My instructor is so funny and so helpful, I can't imagine trying to learn these terms with the previous teacher. As for history, I did take one history class, American history, It was okay, my favorite part is when we studied the Greenville Treaty and I found out during that time that a friend who owns 80 acres, that part of her land was where they signed this treaty. I took pictures and shared with my teacher, she was excited to see the pictures.

I enjoyed English too but only the literature part. I didn't care for the grammar. I agree that if the teacher/instructor isn't good and doesn't make it interesting then you probably won't get much out of it. Unfortunately for me, I had the same history teacher all four years in high school.
