I Never Would Have Thought I Would Love History

When I was in school, history was one of my worst subjects with math being on the top. I didn't care about history as it all seemed like having to memorize dates and such. Never in a million years would I have thought that now I would love it. I was more interested in science and biology.
Although I still like science and biology, I love any and everything that has to do with history. I love reading and learning all about different eras, people and how they lived and it really surprises me at times. I wish I had this same interest when I was in school but it just goes to show how things can change over the years.
Do you love history as well? Do you have a part of history that is your favorite?

@Marilynda It didn't catch my attention either. I thought it was so boring. That's why I am surprised that I love it now but now I don't have to memorize anything. I can just enjoy learning.

I'm so much more interested in history now than I was as a kid.

I love history - as a re-enactor my favourite era is undoubtedly the Stuart Civil War period of the mid 17th century

@arthurchappell I think that is cool! Where I live now, it's out in the country and no one does things like that.

@simone10 Yes, I remember my Mom hiring a tutor to help me through High School Geometry. Luckily I passed with a C.

@LeaPea2417 I probably should have had a tutor as it would have helped me so much.

History is far and away my favorite subject. (My postgraduate degrees are History majors) So much of it seems to be taught badly though - no wonder you didn't care for it if you were pressured into memorizing stuff.

@troyburns To me, that seemed like all history was about at the time, memorizing people, dates and events.

@troyburns You must have had some really great teachers. I never did and I would get lost in the memorization instead of the people.

I love history, but I always did. I did not enjoy studying it in elementary school. I think that is mostly because they barely skimmed the surface. It was dumbed down history, that they thought kids could handle. I did always enjoy reading books about history. I guess my favorite part is the California gold rush.

I love History and I don't like math - I only loved Math once because our teacher was really awesome! but still i am poor with numbers :) I love biology too! I did not like chemistry and Physics - I think having a teacher who knows how to make lecture interesting is a huge factor.

I didn't like history, math, or science (I loved English) but I think it depends on the teacher. Like I took a Geology class last winter/spring semester and I only liked the last part where we went on field trips, I hated the lecture and lab, I didn't understand it. This semester, I am taking Geology I (I had to take 2 science classes for my degree) and I absolutely LOVE this class. My instructor is so funny and so helpful, I can't imagine trying to learn these terms with the previous teacher.
As for history, I did take one history class, American history, It was okay, my favorite part is when we studied the Greenville Treaty and I found out during that time that a friend who owns 80 acres, that part of her land was where they signed this treaty. I took pictures and shared with my teacher, she was excited to see the pictures.

@simone10 Yikes! All four years? That had to stink, unless the teacher was really good and from your comment, I believe he or she was not.

@Carmelanirel2 Yes, all four years and she did stink. She was mean and always grumpy and very agitated. In 4 years, I never saw her smile once. I don't think she liked kids very much.

I enjoyed English too but only the literature part. I didn't care for the grammar. I agree that if the teacher/instructor isn't good and doesn't make it interesting then you probably won't get much out of it. Unfortunately for me, I had the same history teacher all four years in high school.

I love history and of course now the emphasis is on understanding the events not memorizing dates. Much more interesting. I love English History the most but any European or American is interesting to me.

@simone10 They really don't memorize anything these days including their math facts, and that I think is a mistake.
