Mouse in the House

Last night before my son went to work he found his hoodie full of dog food. Now there is no way I would put dog food in his hoodie, and Pip certainly couldn't, so the question remained - How did it get there? Today my son changed his room around, cleaning as he moved everything around. As he did so he found a couple more mounds of dog food, proof that we have a mouse taking Pip's food and stashing it in various places in my son's room, as well as in his hoodie. Now we need to get some mouse traps. My son has seen this mouse and seen other evidence of his residence in his room. He said this mouse is a well fed fat mouse. Considering how late I'm up every night, this mouse waits until I'm in bed before he comes out to sneak food from Pip's bowl. So now it's war - us against this mouse we've nicknamed Jerry. If you know a good way to get rid of this mouse - I'm open to your suggestions. Thanks for reading.

We had a mouse that stashed the dog food in various places. I moved the couch to vacuum and there was a layer of dog food covering the whole area under the couch. I had to admire that mouse's industry. The dog food was quite large. Anyway we did what Anja suggested. Peanut butter in the traps. And my husband put tin foil or that expanding spray foam every where there were wires coming into the house.

We had a mouse in the garage last year, my hubby put out a couple of traps with a little smear of peanut butter on it and within 30 minutes had caught a couple of them. He buried them and we haven't been bothered since-thankfully! Once you rid your place of mice you can buy those little plug in sensors, they emit a sound that only mice can hear, you or your pets cannot, and they cannot stand the noise and will refrain from coming into a home with those. We have 1 out in the garage, 1 in our basement and 1 on our main floor.

@paigea I have lots of peanut butter. Time to put it to some good use. I've never heard of expanding foam.

The expanding foam is good for filling in largish gaps.

There's no such thing as one mouse. If you poison them, you don't know where they will go to die and your house could smell. Get some traps, there are excellent ones on Amazon for a good price. A little peanut butter in the trap will lure them. Put all food except canned goods in high cabinets. Tin foil or copper mesh stuffed in crevices will keep them out. It's cold and they want to live indoors this winter, so they will keep coming if you don't manage to find a way to prevent it.

@Rollo1 I love the peanut butter suggestions. I always thought it was cheese. Good to know.

I'm sure you've heard my mice stories. I hate them. I hate seeing their poop everywhere including inside the couch and on top of the mantle. They can and will run anywhere. I have both poison and traps set out. I don't have any pets. As the weather got cool a mouse did find his way inside and into the trap a couple of weeks ago. We haven't seen any sign of anymore this year.... yet.

@patgalca I put peppermint oil in a spray bottle with water. Spray it all around where they can get in. The house smells good, the mice do not like peppermint.

@just4him ... I wondered if you just fed him the one time or more. Only one time is best. What I meant was that if the dog went hungry rather than the one meal then put the dish up where the mouse can't get at it.

Pip's dish is already the smallest one you can get for a pet. The vet wanted her on a diet and only to feed her so much per day. So to put less in the dish wouldn't give her very much food. I nicknamed him Jerry after the famous cat and mouse cartoon - Tom and Jerry.

@celticeagle Mice can get just about anywhere. I feed Pip a bowl every 12 hours.

I just use poison packets that you leave for Jerry to eat. Jerry's cousins have been to visit my house in the past.

I thought about that as well, but wouldn't that be bad for Pip?

@just4him You have to make sure that it is places in such a way that Pip can't get it but the mouse can. I put it places like behind the fridge

Hide the food supply that he's enjoying. Put it away at night after Pip has finished with it. Mice carry diseases and you wouldn't want to think that anything gets passed into the remaining food in the dish while Jerry is there eating from the buffet that Pip could pick up. Good luck with ridding him from your home.

I can relate because the other day i was surprised to see in my second drawer when i opened it , some boiled peanuts . I remember i have given my boss that and he was eating them the other day . I suppose the rats also brought them to my drawer since there are eaten parts too.

@just4him sounds like time for all food to be in heavy containers. speaking of, being the holidays, many used stores put their holiday tins out, great mouse proofing. And I have heard stories of mice stealing dog food and finding places to squirrel it away, like old appliances, when went to be moved, it weighed way too much, so my friends opened it, and found it STUFFED with dog food. lol

Neither of us have seen this before. Apparently this mouse also liked his Halloween candy and Honeycomb cereal. He left the candy wrappers as evidence of his thievery and when my son went to have some Honeycomb, it fell out of the bottom of the bag.

@just4him I have 3 mice that usually reside in my donkeys oats. They have gotten so use to me reaching into the bag, that I have been able to lay my hand in the oats and they will walk into my hand. Maybe if your son starts calling Jerry by name and puts a little bowl of food in the same place, little Jerry will come out.

Mice can be hard to get rid of. I usually end up setting a trap but they can be very cagey even then.

My grandma use that fly trap. You know that yellow sticky paper thingy? spread it out and put some food in the middle, You'll find them trapped there in the morning :)
