Honouring the Dead

Mid-July we were heading to Oberostendorf. Some may remember that we have hosted couch-surfers in Western Australia. These are mostly young folk who might be travelling and come to stay for a night or two. They are happy to sleep on a couch if necessary. Couch-surfing enables people to travel more cheaply. When we first thought of touring Europe we asked couch-surfers for advice on credit cards and camping. Several people offered to host us and our motor-home. Consequently we found ourselves heading for Oberostendorf to meet a couch-surfer. The family were extremely generous to us. We were able to park our van in their farmyard and hook up to the electricity. We had a meal with them. We went out with torches and picked berries to have with ice-cream for sweets. Next day the woman took us on an extended tour of the area ending up with a lovely barbecue at a lake. However before we got to their place we passed through a lovely little village and walked through a churchyard. I have never seen such a well-tended and colourful graveyard. The site had obviously been lovingly tended and were awash with bright coloured flowers. There was also a monument to the men and women who hadn't come home from World War I and II. A lovely stone bridge crossed a little stream in the middle of the village and we were also impressed with the painted walls of some of the businesses.

When my brother was stationed in Germany in the early 70s he remarked about the beautiful cemeteries.

Obviously it is something they've always done.

So I've heard @JudyEv I also heard that a grave there is undone after 20 years, I'm not really sure what that means.

@rebelann I don't know what that would mean either. Maybe in places where they are running out of space they remove the remains to make room for another.

There are other options to get from one frame to the next but that's the one I like best - as you might have guessed.

Beautiful pictures as usual. I have never seen gravesites attended to so lovingly.

@JudyEv That was very thoughtful of the cemetaries to do.

There were five watering cans at both the front and back entrances to make it easy for people.

You met great people ma'am. With the graveyard, keeping them clean and well tended is a way how we really carr of those who have laid down to rest. It reminds me of some traditions here in the Philippines

Some cemeteries in Australia are not so well tended although I think we are improving.
