What are your favorite things to buy at the Dollar Store?

I have this vague feeling that i may have posted about this before, but I hope not. Every few weeks I stop at the Dollar Store. There's one near my home, and there's one near one of my jobs in Berkeley. Among the things I get there are dish washing soap, generic Oxyclean, and Parrot brand Coconut Water. I sometimes get sponges, eye drops, aspirin, bleach and Comet cleanser there as well. If my glasses break, I'll even score some reading glasses there. Do you have favorite things that you get at the Dollar Store?

We do not have Dollar Stores, it would be wonderful to be able to buy medications in the grocery stores like you do in the United States. Here even the simple aspirin has to be sold by Pharmacists and the products cost ten time more than in the United States.

@Marilynda1225 When I traveled to the United States, I remember that I bought back aspirin, ipubrofen, cough and cold medicine... I am glad the custom never opened my luggage.

Our grocery stores have everything and I didn't realize what a convenience it is for us here in the US

Wow. I'd be in some pretty serious pain if I didn't have my Aleve. Is it legal to import that stuff from the US? It must be (in small quantities). When I visited Austria a couple of years ago, they didn't care about my meds.

Wish we had one of them here. I would love it. I did visit one in the US and it was fantastic.

It's funny that I'm extravagant when it comes to guitars, and I eat out a lot, but I'm really frugal when it comes to cleaning supplies, shampoo, and such.

@TheHorse No I can understand why on this account. These items are over priced in all stores. We need them so why not save when we have to buy.

@TheHorse I get this one. I know I did buy some of these products for my mom and I did like them better than the ones she was buying that cost so much more. She too thought they were better and started to stock up there after I was gone.

I assume that the Dollar Store equates to the Pound shops that we have in England. I do visit such stores on a frequent basis, but tend to buy at random.

@TheHorse Yes it does. £1 equates top around $1.50 at present. They do sell some incredible items for £1 at times. Recently I required a USB mouse for a specific purpose and was not really bothered about how fancy it was because it was only for emergency use, which I managed to find in one of these stores.

@Asylum Wow--that sounds like a good buy. I had thought a pound was worth somewhat more than a dollar, but I wasn't sure. Thanks for the info.

Does everything sell for a pound there (at the Pound Store)? Yikes, I don't even know the exchange rate right now.

The only thing I've been buying lately has been snack-size plastic bags for when we package up snacks for the kindergartner's class. We have to send something once a month, so a box lasts two months. I have an assortment of wire baskets that I use in the fridge and pantry, and the little puzzles and coloring books they have are great for stocking stuffers around this time of year. Occasionally we'll get packages of glow sticks for the kids to play with. I was getting toothbrushes there for a while, too, since my daughter was obsessed with some of the Hello Kitty designs they had. Oh, and on @sharon6345's advice, I ended up buying a bottle of the Awesome cleaner they had. It's every bit as great as she said it would be.

@yukimori Ah, that's the same company that makes my pretend Oxyclean. I haven't tried the all-purpose cleaner.

Pretty much everything I buy is from there @TheHorse . My food, the critters food and all household supplies. When I walk in the store, the staff calls me by my first name. If I were to guess, I probably 'own' half of the store by now. Today when I went in, I gave them a Xmas card.

@nanette64 The thought of buying meat at the dollar store just creeps me out for some reason.

@TheHorse All the canned goods are the same as any grocery store except cheaper. They have eggs, lunchmeat, frozen meals, etc...they're all good.

We have shops similar to Dollar Store in your country. I tend to get hand wash, laundry detergent, and other cleaning supplies. I seldom buy food or drinks.

I get a lot of my cleaning supplies there. It's also a good place to get little kid stuff like balls and small cars.

We don't one of these close by so it's like a kid in a candy shop when I go in. We more or less kitted out the motor-home from one of these types of stores in Ireland.

If I were on the road, and couldn't do my usual Trader Joe's thing,I could go crazy there. As it is, I usually only wind up spending about $5 to $7 there on any given trip.

I get candles, I like to stay stocked up in case of power outages. It's also good for cleaning products, kitchen gadgets and craft supplies.

I bought a can opener there that barely worked, but I got a few months out of it. Oh thanks--I need more candles!

@TheHorse Can openers always seem to be iffy. The pot holders and serving spoons are OK though.
