Linderhof Palace is the smallest of three palaces built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. It is the only one he saw completed. The palace of Versailles of the French Sun King Louis XIV was the inspiration for Linderhof, although the building is on a smaller scale. The landscaped gardens cover an area of 125 acres or around 50 hectares. The gilded statues, water features and other ornamental features are striking. It was a great shame that we weren't allowed to take photos inside as the interior was amazing.
Ludwig regarded himself as a 'Moon King' and would read or be awake all night, sleeping during the day. Vince sneaked a photo of the sumptuous bedroom. It's the last photo. The bed is raised on steps in an alcove closed off with a gilded balustrade. There is a glass candelabra here that holds 108 candles.
The Hall of Mirrors creates the effect of a never-ending space. There is a carpet here made of ostrich plumes.
The dining room has a disappearing dumb-waiter. Ludwig dined alone but would have the table set for four so he could talk to imaginary people. He rarely entertained. This is the first of two posts and two slideshows on Linderhof Castle.

I remember when my kids talked to their imaginary friends. They grew out of it.

Lugwig sounds like me since I love to stay up at night too. What a place! I think he needed to get some rest.

King Ludwig certainly knew how to please himself although this was the only Palace he was able to see completed. He must have had great taste even though he had some peculiarities, such as treating the day as night. I wonder if anyone ever saw him under those conditions.

His bed was raised up like an altar so his servants would perceive him as god-like. He really liked French furnishings etc but also oriental. Quite eclectic tastes really.

@shellyjaneo It's surprises me that adults fall out of bed. My brother-in-law does too apparently. He has crazy dreams and thrashes around and ends up falling out of bed.

He seems a very strange man. He didn't have a very happy childhood which wouldn't have helped.

He was dearly loved by all his subjects. Obviously you have no subjects. You need to get yourself some subjects.
Actually his subjects didn't have a lot of money either but perhaps that's because they gave it all to Ludwig.

In the hall of mirrors there were 70 odd very expensive urns. The total value must have been mind-blowing.
