I'm so glad my parents never did this to me

I wrote earlier today about a lady we were talking to at the airport. She was about to fly to Geneva for a ski-holiday. Her son was sitting at the table with his head on his arms looking like he wished the earth would open up and swallow him up. The mum revealed that she, her husband and their elder son were gate-crashing the younger son's school ski trip. They had found a bargain deal for the same budget hotel that the school had booked and decided to tag along. She proudly told me that they'd got the deal for much less than the school was paying. I cannot think of anything that would have embarrassed me more as a school kid than having my entire family show up on my school trip. Something like this would have probably had me asking for a transfer to another school (or to be adopted). School trips are about getting AWAY from your family, not having them tag along and embarrass you.

They are doing the young man any favors and should have thought about this more as the boy doesn't want his parents around on this trip. He will be so embarassed and ridiculed by his peers.

I would fake an illness and ask to stay AT home..that would be one of the occasions where lying might actually get you out of this nightmare.

@boiboing My kids would have just refused to go, in fact they would probably have told me they were going to Jamaica just in case I got any funny ideas about tagging along. That's absolutely disgraceful to do that to your child. Make sure you enjoy Morocco.

@Marcyaz I think so, it's a good way to get their kid to not like them. I would never do that to my kids.

That's what I think. Very insensitive. I wonder that they can't remember what it was like to be a teenager and to want to fit in.

I sincerely hope the one on the school trip gets some time away from his family on the trip... Or that the parents at least do other things and don't tag along on the same part of the piste...

As a kid, I always felt sorry for those kids whose parents volunteered to chaperone school functions.

I agree and 10000 per cent worse when they aren't part of the chaperone team, they're just tagging along independently. I hope the school don't invite them to join in with the activities.

As a child I would have felt like you do. But I know many children love having their family along.

In our schools they generally ask as many parents to tag along as possible as extra chaperones, then the school doesn't have to pay staff to chaperone. A good majority of the parents do go along to help out which is great. I usually can't because of work and the other kids. If I could, my kids would be fine with it. Their whole class knows me as I'm already quite involved in school functions and fundraisers and it's a small town.

@boiboing Yes, around here it's the norm and kids want their parents to be involved because that's what is expected here. But I agree there are some situations where the parents need to butt out or take their trip at a different time.

I think if lots of parents did it, maybe it'd be OK. But if you're the only kid whose folks show up, you'd just hate it.

@boiboing It is enough to make the boy rebel badly. Like you say very tempted to give them a little shove.

I don't know how people can be so insensitive at times. What on earth were they thinking? I think this is a pretty terrible thing to do to a child.

Yeah, that was an uncool thing to do to a kid. UNLESS they had a really good reason, or maybe he knew about it ahead of time and was okay with it.
