Salzburg's Toy Museum

While we were in Salzburg in July 2015, we visited the Toy Museum. This occupies part of the Bürgerspital which was founded in 1327 by Archbishop Friedrich III as an old people's home for poor Salzburg citizens. Various additions and alterations were made but the poor unhygienic housing conditions were not improved until 1898 when new quarters were built for the elderly and the Bürgerspital was used for flats, workshops and official purposes. From 1956, the Toy Museum was allotted facilities in the building and in 1978, the Toy Museum was opened. It is a beautifully renovated building set back against a solid wall of rock. Clever wood-working techniques were evident in the puppets representing the von Trapp family of Sound of Music fame. I like the little roosters with their tails of curled wood. The doll's house and furniture showed some wonderful craftsmanship. We had to remove our shoes when we entered which seemed a bit strange but many of the displays were interactive and children were having a great time trying out the various exhibits.

I agree with Anna @LadyDuck, thar rock face is pretty frightening to be standing undrr. But I really loved the von Trapp family dolls. Imagine, little von Trapp action figures!

I also liked the dolls, but the rock wall is intimidating.

The position of the building, against the solid wall of rock, made my heart skip some beats. I do not think I would be able to visit this place.

Oh, that would be a shame. It didn't appear frightening. The wall wasn't overhanging so didn't look dangerous. It was a very massive wall however.

@JudyEv I know, but there are things that make me feel uncomfortable, I am sure it comes from my very young age, I remember something like this that scared me.

@LadyDuck You will see n the next lot of photos more shops that back on to this great sheet of rock. If you have a fright as a child, even if you can't remember it exactly, it can sometimes remain throughout life as a fear.

Nothing was mass produced. A lot of work went into some of the items.

We spent ages in there. It was a lot of fun watching kids playing with the train sets, etc too.

Toy museum is great. In holidays I usually search places like park, museum for children to enjoy. Puppet museum is a great idea for children to enjoy.

I think if you have a child with you, you enjoy these things even more as you see it more through their eyes.

There was a polka dot wall and you could put on a polka dot gown and 'disappear' against the wall. Oh, to be young again!
