Where's the Beef (Recipe)?

United States

After serious consideration we opted to go with Prime Rib for Christmas dinner. Last year we bought one from Ingles Grocery Store. They had them on special Christmas week. The meat was tough and wasn't a big hit with us. While in Cleveland last week we checked the Prime Ribs at Publix. They had the right size but they had not trimmed any of the top layer of fat, which was half the weight of the meat. I don't like paying for fat! After checking several online sites I saw an ad for Prime Rib from Omaha Steaks. A 4-pound roast, nicely trimmed, for $99. I ordered it using Ebates and earned 4% cash back, plus Swagbucks kicked in and I'll get almost 300 points for that purchase. Yes, $99 is costly, but we know there will be little waste. It arrived last night (UPS working late again!) and my husband said it looks good! The only problem, they put a recipe guide for cooking steak in the package....nothing on how to properly cook the Prime Rib. I sent them an email. We have cooked this type of meat several times but it's nice to have a recipe to make sure we're doing it right! So Omaha, where's the Beef (recipe)?? Have you checked their site? I think to remember that Omaha Steaks has a recipe section, you can find more than one that is interesting.

I know, I just wanted to bust their chops - when you pay $99 you should get proper instructions with the product.

@AbbyGreenhill I agree, but we do not get proper written instructions when we pay the same for buying from our butcher.

@LadyDuck Yes, but you are talking to that person face to face aren't you, you can ask. I can't ask the keyboard! If I had a butcher to buy from I would say, "how is the best way to cook this?"

Not yet, it's still early in Omaha plus it's not earth shattering so I probably won't hear from them for a few days.

There are no doubt many recipes available online, but you are right that providing a recipe for a different product is not very useful.

@AbbyGreenhill Stop complaining and get it cooked. You can always eat it raw if you cannot find a recipe.

I like to get what I pay for and I like to keep these places on their toes.

So far, I have not ordered meat online, and I guess, this is something not very common here, as of now.

Over here it is fairly common and if you live where you can't buy good beef in a store, it sure comes in handy.

You would think they would include a recipe after you spent that much. I have been wanting to order from Omaha, I see some pretty good deals there. Are you satisfied with the quality of meat that you order from them?

We have ordered from them many times over the years. They guaranty their products, so I have no fear of complaining if it doesn't meet my standards!

Recipe? good meat needs a dash of salt and pepper, then to be thrown over a hot fire, singed a little on each side and consumed with gusto :)

@Ketage I knew the consumed with gusto part - I need to know how long in the oven!

We never bake prime rib at home. We only get it out and the photo above is the only way I would eat it. It looks nicely cooked. I don't understand people who eat prime rib with a real pink tinge to it. I think it is not cooked enough. I only like beef well done.

@AbbyGreenhill My husband likes to eat it the way you do, pink in the middle.

@LeaPea2417 See, if you cooked one at home you could eat the end which would be well done and he could have the middle.

We used to go to a little restaurant in what is called 'The Hollow" here and have their prime rib. I usually go for the fish in a nice restaurant. (I think I was a bear or something in another life) But, after having a bite of my then husband's prime rib I fell for it. I also like T-Bone. Sometihng about the bone I think. Do you have it with horseradish? I like beef with some. Yum! Enjoy!

No horseradish, I like it just as it. I use a lot of horseradish with seafood. Now I'm getting hungry for prime rib and shrimp!

Yes it is, but i'ts once a year and I know it will be good. It's better than paying $50-70 and not being able to chew the meat.
