Things I'd like to have..

once more before I pass on. So my daughter was going over to the store to pick up a prescription. I said it would be nice if she got us a pie for desert tonight. We discussed different types and I said pumpkin would be good. She made a sour face and said she didn't like it. I said to please make it something besides the Marionberry we have had in the past. I am getting rather tired of it. So, what do you suppose she came home with? A pumpkin pie! And whipped cream of course. So, I was thinking while eating my piece how there are certain foods I would love to have one more time before I leave life behind. I think that real whipped cream would be one. Actual ice cold whipping cream, sugar and vanilla. We used to take the cream off of the top of our milk and use it for whipping. So good. And, now days you can't even get real vanilla extract. My grandmother's birthday cake would be one too. But I will never have one of those again. Grams used to make one for whoever's birthday it was. It had a certain flavor, never to be captured again. Taco John's. They used to make a enchilada that was to mame for. You notice I didn't say 'die for'. But it was good. Home made. Before they changed to canned everything and went down hill. A deli sandwich from the place next door to where I worked. They made the best sandwiches. The little shop was right next door to the telephone building when I worked as a operator. This was back in the mid to late 70's. That'll do it for this time. Any dishes you can't get anymore?

@arthurchappell I do two big craft shows every summer and both offer food on site. One is healthy food and the other is junk food. Have you ever tried a blooming Onion? Heavenly, a whole onion partially cut and dipped in batter and then deep fried, Talk about heaven...

If you go to county fairs in the summer and fall, fried bread is still there. In Oklahoma it was a big Native thing and sooooo delicious.

I'd like to find that French girl I met on the plane on the way from Paris to San Francisco, but lost track of at customs. We forgot to exchange numbers while still in the air.

I really miss my grandmother's homemade coconut cake and boiled custard. She was really good at baking and everything tasted so much better coming from her. She also made a delicious strawberry cake.

Yes good Mexican food with all the right spices. I can make it here but it's not the same. I do miss all of my Mexican dishes and stuff I was so use to eating for so long. I also miss a good Gyros from a Greek Restaurant. I do love them so much. Nothing like that here on the islands.

Taco John's was so good. I loved their food. Now Taco Bell has moved in and their food is like dog food compared.

Mom's applesauce raisin loaf for Christmas. I could duplicate it, but it wouldn't be the same. It wouldn't be Mom's. Mom's canned pickles and tomatoes. I didn't know how bad canned tomatoes were until I bought them in the store. Completely different flavor and texture. Same with the pickles. In her later years she started making strawberry jam. Those days are gone.

There was a certain flavor to the food grandma made. I once found a restaurant that had that flavor. It went out of business.

I know what you mean by 'a certain flavor'. My grandma's birthday cake was that same way. I have never been able to capture it. The restaurant probably couldn't afford to continue to make things from scratch.

My mom was too. She could make a great meal out of next to nothing. My mom bought groceries for four people for a month on very little. She went to several stores and bought the sales. She had $15 a week for groceries.

Since moving south there are lots of things we can't get anymore - good Chinese and Japanese - real Jewish rye bread, NY Style bagels just to name a few. What is Marionberry?

That is sad. I love Chinese food. The bread are good too. Marionberry is just a mix of raspberries and blackberries. Good pie. I just get tired of it. Seems to be one of the store's specialties. They have it all the time.

"And, now days you can't even get real vanilla extract. " Yes you can at of all places The Dollar Tree store! I loved the Hymie's Special 3 decker sandwich at the Stage DEli and I heard after 70 years, that I know of, they just closed their doors!

You can get vanilla extract but it is diluted. The good places can't afford to continue. They can't make any money.

I'd really miss the old traditional soya bean milk which so smooth and true to its taste. Back in the days, I remember how my grandfather (like any good soya bean milk makers) will take the trouble to wash the soya beans thoroughly and soak them for a short while before grinding it. Nowadays with the food processors people don't even bother how to store and clean it before throwing it into the processor. So you can imagine what the taste is like where in some cases you can taste the earth in your cup.

@celticeagle I can assure you that the soya milk tastes very different on how they are prepared. In the traditional case, they are creamier, fragrant and most of all pleasantly smooth. Compared to the precariously prepared ones done today where it is too diluted or unpleasant. Then there are the ready mixes which I can remain speechless.
