I wish to all of you a very Happy and Prosperous New Year.
Do you know that the 2016 is a leap year? This year we are going to have a 29th of February.
There are beliefs around the leap year.
According to an old Irish legend, during leap years, women can propose to their men.
In Scotland, it is considered unlucky to be born on Leap Day.
In Italy the leap year is considered unlucky. This because the ancient civilizations, considered any unusual event as a bad omen.
No matter the beliefs, let's hope that this 2016 is going to be a wonderful year.

Did you know that leap years do not always occur every 4 years? This does not appear to be as widely known as I originally thought that it should be.
When the Gregorian calendar was introduced it included the concept of only having 97 leap years every 4 centuries, which apparently keeps us in better synchronisation with stellar time.
If the year ends with 00, such as 1800, 1900, 2000, etcetera, then the first two digits have to be divisible by four to qualify as a leap year. Therefore 1900 was not a leap year, 2000 was a leap year but not 2100 and so forth.

I thought a leap year would be where we leap and go straight to 2017.
What will happen this year will be uncertain but let's do the best we can with whatever comes our way!

We have a nephew born on leap day, so we've been looking forward to 2016 since he was born in 2000, he'll be celebrating for the fourth time on his actual birthday and will be 16 years old. A young man already.
Let's all believe that 2016 will be a great year, even with the leapday, which to many born on that date is special!

@LadyDuck I did not know Columbus discovered America in a leap year, thats awesome. I know they were Christians and that God never does anything haphazardly, everything has a meaning. I just wonder what the leap year meant then?

I didn't know about those beliefs around leap year. I always like leap year since I was young, perhaps because it's more special than the rest.
When I explained to my son what a leap year is, and told him the little sister was born in leap year, then he told me he'd like another brother or sister to be born in leap year, which is year 2016 as well.
Yes, it'll be a wonderful year!

Very nice, Anna! We got good wishes for the coming year and a history lesson and a recap of ancient beliefs! An "all in one" post! I like it!
I hope you are correct and we all have a wonderful 2016!

@DaddyEvil My knee is better, in a few days I think I will be able to walk normally. No need to see the doctor... I hope. Thanks for asking.

@LadyDuck I am sure we will, Anna!
OH! That does remind me, though. How is your knee today, hon? Have you gotten to a doctor yet?

I learned that this year is a leap year since my son told me we have 29 days for February. It is very interesting to know the foreign culture of the leap year. Actually we also have the similar culture here, but I forget whether it is good luck or bad luck...

@LadyDuck I think 2016 will come down as one of the most 'unusual' years we've had. That's putting it mildly!

@allen0187 As you say "unusual" is mild for this terrible year. I am so glad it's coming to an end.

I did not know those facts!
I had a friend that had a girlfriend (no longer together) but their anniversary of first dating was Feb 29, so when 1 year of dating went around.. they didn't have an actual date.
