Have the James Bond Women Become More Modest?

Recently, my husband and I went to see the latest James Bond movie, "Spectre." As always, there were incredible chase scenes, intrigue, and romance. My husband and I enjoyed the movie. One thing I noticed, however, was how modest the "Bond women" were in "Spectre." Nothing on their bodies was ever visible, other than bare arms and shoulders. In the past, the movies were full of women like "Ms. P**ssy Galore" (MyLot required me to alter her real name) or the naked, gold-painted woman in "Goldfinger." Even when the women were not naked or nearly naked, they were always running around in micro-bikinis. Don't get me wrong. I think a little more modesty was in good taste. However, "Spectre" was noticeably different in this regard from the past movies. Did anyone else notice the same thing? What did you think of "Spectre"?

i feel the same way. I watched all the James Bond movies but i felt the same way. I don't like the character too. Some of the scenes are good in those movies but that's it.

When I was a teen and young adult, there was nothing else like James Bond. Today, there is the Bourne Identity and lots of other really good shows!

@sparial02 - I understand what you mean. The movies are beginning to seem a little dated, even to me.

I stopped watching Bond movies when Sean Connery left. They were not the same for me.

@JohnRoberts - Yes, whenever I think of James Bond, Sean Connery is the first one to come to mind.

Sean Connery is the one and only Bond! All others are pretenders.

Spectre was okay, but not the best of James Bond. I think Daniel Craig was pretty good in the role, but I still liked Sean Connery the most.

I think a lot of people in our generation preferred Sean Connery. However, we all have to move on. What I see, though, is that the younger generation just doesn't think that James Bond is all that exciting, no matter who plays him.

@JohnRoberts - I like what you said about the different James Bond actors. I will pay more attention to then now, when I watch the old movies.

Daniel Craig is the best Bond after Connery for taking a serious approach. Moore was too silly or at least the films too silly. Brosnan wanted a Connery vibe but said the producers wanted to stick with the Moore formula to his chagrin.

This James Bond was not very popular. I think they are just as popular as they used to be. It didn't help that Daniel Craig said he may never want to do another one! Sounds like even he is getting tired of the James Bond franchise.

I have not seen a Bond movie for many years and am not sure I will get around to this one. Sean Connery was the quintessential Bond for me.

I think everyone in our generation preferred Sean Connery above all the other Bond men!

I think I've only ever seen one Bond movie and can't remember much about that. I think it's probably a good thing if the actress is modest.

Yes, I think it is better when they are modest. It is just that it seems dramatically different. It's like they did a remake of "Pretty Woman" and she was dressed like a nun.

@JudyEv - Yes, it was a pretty radical change. I probably would not have noticed it otherwise.

The new Bond girl is not so young, I suppose she refused to play in bikini. Monica Bellucci does not like to show her age.

@DeborahDiane Bellucci is very careful to look up all the time not to show the lines on her neck. Personally I do no like her, but you can consider she is still a nice woman, but not in bikini.

@LadyDuck - Thanks for telling me more about her. I didn't know much about her, although I though she did a good job in the movie playing a serious doctor who resented her father, who was an assassin.

That's a good point. She certainly looked very youthful ... but maybe she wouldn't have looked as good in a bikini. Of course, most of the scenes were winter scenes, but they could have thrown in a spa scene or a hot tub, if they wanted to have some bikini scenes.

I haven't seen it yet but I would applaud it as a good thing. Women are getting more interesting parts in Bond movies and being a bit more three-dimensional than in the days of bikinis and big hairdos.

I'm a big Bond fan, though I haven't seen the latest one yet. Over the years, quite a few of Bond's female co-stars didn't show much skin - the real problem is that they didn't show much depth either. It's clear that times have changed though. We call them "Bond women" now, when for most of the franchise's history they were "Bond girls."

Yes, in the old days they did not show much depth. They were just objects. Now, they have intelligence and are interesting people.

I got around to watching this finally and what a disappointment. Daniel Craig is no James Bond and it seemed reduced to pure comic book level.

@JamesHxstatic - I agree that none of the other Bond actors, including Daniel Craig, have been able to fill the shoes of Sean Connery.

@DeborahDiane Maybe Hollywood is trying not to be so provocative for a change. That would be nice. Or maybe it was the choice of the actors/actresses in the film.

I haven't seen this one, but it would be nice if the movie started a trend in the opposite direction. A little bit left up to the imagination is good thing. It's why Hitchcock movies are scarier than slasher films.

I agree with you completely and, you are right, the Hitchcock movies are much scarier than the slasher films. Our imaginations can really be more powerful than anything on the screen.

I agree. I thought the modesty was a big improvement and made the characters seem more realistic and serious.
