Frida the Fridge Freezer has arrived

Last week I ordered a new fridge-freezer - what the stockists in the UK call an 'American Fridge Freezer'. It doesn't come from America, it doesn't have a funny accent and it's probably from Korea or somewhere like that, but the industry calls 'side by side' fridge freezers 'American' because they are BIG. We booked for it to come today as delivery was cheapest on Sunday and I needed a day when my husband would be home. It's like taking delivery of a tank - but without the self-propulsion of a tank. I had booked for the delivery company to not only bring the new one but to take away its predecessor too. I was pretty horrified to see two young men - not particularly bulky or muscled - manually lifting a 120 kg fridge (that's about 260 lbs for those nations who insist on ignoring the international standard weights and measures) with only a couple of padded straps to help. Out with the old and in with the new! After a good half hour fighting to get her out of her packaging and into position, we are happy to let Frida the Fridge Freezer settle after her journey for 4 hours before we switch her one and a couple more hours before we start to fill her. Our old Whirlpool was a liability and nothing but trouble. The delivery guys told us very nicely, but with a clear "Duh! What do you expect if you buy one of those?" that they would never recommend Whirlpool (or Candy) but we should be fine with Frida. Let's hope they are right.

I hope you will be happy with Frida the BIG fride/freezer. I would also never buy Candy, all the washing machine I saw, made by Candy, had water leakages, even when new.

@boiboing They are usually reliable, much better than the sale personnel.

I don't think I've ever had one but I take the feedback of delivery men and repairers quite seriously.

Have never heard of Candy I don't think those are sold in the US. I have a Frigidaire. It's pretty new, so far so good.

@ivyparkgirl I haven't either, it must be a brand of refrigerator only in England I'm thinking.

Did the freezer come with the name Frida or did you 'christen' it that way? No deliveries of anything in Germany on a Sunday except takeaway food!

No, we named her. I'm sure if she had come from Ikea she's have had a name but not from the electrical store.

@MALUSE I was thinking of Frida Kahlo - probably as I mused on back pain after watching the delivery guys carry the old one out and the new one in.

I hope you have a long relationship with Frida and she is reliable and works her socks off for you!. They are massive monstrosities aren't they! They had to remove the fridge doors to get ours in our house.

@boiboing probably cheaper than a coffin these days too! If it was a good fridge you could be kept on ice for an eternity!

I quite like those big fridge/freezers but they're certainly too big for someone like me. I dream is to own a Smeg fridge/freezer (sad, I know!). Hope Frida behaves herself for many years in your house.

To be honest, it's too big for us too. Are Smegs still trendy? I know they are very pretty.

I watched a UK vlogger a few years ago and he was in his kitchen. I was surprised that he had to lean down under the cupboard to get to his fridge / freezer. I have to admit that I thought it was a little strange. I also wondered if ALL fridge / freezer's were like that. I learned after that nope you can get the "economy" size of a fridge / freezer if you so wish. I have to say that I love your passive / aggressive passes towards us "Across the Pond".

Not sure if I've ever heard of a brand named "Frida" that sells refrigerators... I personally opt for Samsung's side by side refrigerators as they look good, and they work good... Congo for the new fridge btw, Give us a party here at mylot!! :P

Our friends' new house has all mod cons including a laundry chute called Linda and a dumb waiter called Derek. Maybe I need to start naming some of my appliances.

It's not that I ignore them, I'm just not familiar with kg versus pounds. I'm glad you got the new one in place. I've never had a problem with Whirlpool. I have a Whirlpool washer that refuses to die, good thing because I can't afford to replace it just yet.

We only had one delivery guy when we bought our new fridge and it took him a while to get it in here by himself. You were lucky to have two.
