I stated a while back that Math wasn't one of my favorite subjects when in high school. I wasn't good at it and it just never really clicked with me. The subjects I really enjoyed was English and Science. I'm not sure if it's the same now but back when I graduated in 1974, we had to have a major and at least one minor. A major was a subject you took for 4 years or a certain amount of credits (which I don't remember) and a minor was a subject you took for 2 years or a certain amount of credits. I actually had two majors, one was in Home Economics and the other was Business. My Minor was in Science which I really enjoyed and probably should have majored in. I really don't remember now why I didn't. Do you remember what your majors and minors were in high school?

Same here. All of us took the same subjects, pretty traditional. Kids nowadays should be given choices.

We didn't have majors and minors. If we wanted to go to university we needed five subjects from several groups. English was mandatory, we had to have a science of some sort, and a Maths, At the time Music counted as a Maths otherwise I would have been battling. We could have two or three from the groups.

I think about going back to college just to take more history courses but honestly these days you can learn a lot on the History Channel. @simone10 Except of course I would prefer British history.

We have compulsory subjects in each stream. I took the bioscience stream, so Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Bio were the four compulsory subjects. It was for 2 years after our secondary exam. Before that we had to study all subjects including history, geography and literature.

@simone10 and I wish just the opposite, of having a choice to select the subjects to our liking. The grass is always greener on the other side

In our high school we had no choice. I wound up in honors classes for all the major subjects. However, in college, I was an English major and psychology minor.

@DianneN I always wanted to learn French but took Spanish instead. I don't even remember why now but still wish I had taken it in high school.

I am seeing a lot of comments where people didn't have a choice in their subjects during high school. I wonder why our school was so different unless they were doing it to prepare us for college.

@simone10 I have no idea why it is not uniform, but I do know that I was in the group bound for college. The others took more trade courses, I believe. I was too busy practicing my French. Lol!

We didn't have majors and minors. We were however, told which subjects we had to take every year and which ones were just a year or two.

@just4him I don't remember if we actually had a reading list but we did have things that were required reading in English.

@simone10 Mine certainly was. We didn't even have a required reading list like so many other schools had. People look at me odd when I tell them I haven't read this or that book and it was on their reading list.

Our high school is different as well, we did not have major and minor. We got to choose either Science or Business. As Science students, we have to study Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and the languages. We couldn't choose to study other subjects in Business.

We didn't need majors or minors in high school, just a minimum number of credits in the basic classes (science, math, social studies, and English) and then another minimum number of credits of electives. My favorites were science (chemistry and physics) and math. When I went to college I majored in Sociology and minored in Pyschology and Human Development.

No majors or minors for me until I got to University. I remember liking English and History best and that's what I continued to study for my degree. My main interest has always been human nature so minor subjects tended be along those lines too.

That is what I am finding that a lot of people didn't have majors or minors but we did. I always thought everyone elses classes were structured like ours was but now I know I was wrong.

In high school we had a matriculation path which was leading to University, a path that was leading more to vocational colleges, and a path to a general high school diploma. In university my major was Social Studies and my minor was French!

@paigea Yes, it can come in handy sometimes as I am around more people who speak Spanish than French. But French always seems to be so romantic.

We had a prescribed number of credits in each category that we had to successfully pass in order to graduate. Your alternatives were the languages, you could choose either French or Spanish, and in the arts you could choose an actual art course or home economics. I went thru high school enrolled in the advanced courses, which meant that you would be eligible, if you had the correct number of credits, to apply for university. The general courses allowed a student to apply for admission to college.
