[Photo] Frost crystals on a leaf

I snuck outside with my camera while everyone else in the house was sleeping this morning. It was a great time to do it--we had a good frost last night, which left a nice crust of well-defined crystals covering cars and fallen leaves.
It's been a while since I used my macro lens for actual macro photography. It's a welcome change from the portraits I've been taking with it recently.

Very nice. I did a lot of macros in the past, but I have no more macro lens for my actual camera. Since he retired an old friend has specialized in macros of insects in his garden and has published two books with these photos. I give you a link to a web page with some of his shots, if you are interested.

Oh, wonderful! Thanks so much for sharing that, @topffer!
It's a bit too cold for insects right now. I'm actually hoping to have the chance to take a trip to Kansas over the summer... I miss having the chance to photograph all the butterflies that congregate at the gardens in the summertime!

That is a gorgeous photo. I do the same thing but my favorite thing to catch with macro is snow flakes.

@yukimori I stand on my front porch and let the flakes fall on my parka (hard flat fabric) or a pullover that has a fluffy texture. I wait until I see the perfect flake and use my macro setting to get a close up. Often I have to shoot a dozen to get one great shot. I am away from my computer so can't add one to this comment. Maybe when I get home if I remember...

Outstanding shot, you should take more macros I'm thinking. It's my favorite form of photography, I take lots of macro of just about anything, but mostly nature.

Thanks!
Macro photography is one of my favorite types of photography, too. I haven't been making time to get out and shoot recently, although I started off the year with a few trips out that yielded some nice results.
One of my other favorites is infrared photography, which requires either special film, a filter, or a modified DSLR camera to capture infrared light that the human eye can't see. I fell in love with the surreal effects it creates during one of my photography classes... there's just something utterly magical about puffy white clouds, black skies, and glowing foliage!

Very awesome Yuki. I love the detail and color of something so simple.

Thanks! It took me ages to realize just how much I love to play with vibrant colors... my mom always stuck to 'boring' neutral shades when it came to design, so I never really strayed too far from that. Now, I'm like "Yes, I'll take that stand mixer... in eye-popping electric pink."
It's just funny that it came out in my photography a long time before I realized I wanted it in other parts of my life, too...
