Good Gumbo Weather

United States

It is definitely "Good Gumbo Weather" down here in the South this week. What we call "Good Gumbo Weather" is anything under 60 degrees! And a good rainstorm usually helps too! I awoke to 31 degrees! Time to get a roux going and make a pot of gumbo!' How about ya'll? What do ya'll like to cook and eat when the weather gets cold?

I love a good gumbo, but I cannot find okra (gumbos) here in Switzerland.

I have a lot of okra in my freezer. Lots of my family had gardens over the summer and gave me lots of it.

@kellyr634 Lucky you! If at least I could find fresh okra once, I will try to plant the seeds in my garden.

with cold weather it makes you want to eat those thick hearty foods that keep you warm fattier foods. stews, soups casseroles.

I don't really know what gumbo is - is it a sort of stew? Oh, ok, I've just read @LadyDuck 's explanation below.

When I was out earlier the town clock said 18 degrees F and once I got home I put on a pot of soup. Definitely a soup kind of day (or gumbo in your neck of the woods)

And the most important part about a gumbo is getting your roux right. I like it dark, but some like it light.

@kellyr634 So true, the roux is very important, I like it medium dark.

@Auntylou Gumbo is a stew made in southern Louisiana. It is made primarily of a stock, shellfish (or meat) celery, bell peppers, onions and okra.

Beef stew is always good in the winter. I made homemade pea soup last night, it was so good on such a cold snowy night.

@kellyr634 If you like peas you will probably like pea soup. And it's really easy to make.

@fishtiger58 I do like peas, and my family loves them too. I may have to look up a recipe to try this weekend.
