Hoover Dam

The first time I ever saw the Hoover Dam, it was in the 70's. My ex-husband and I took a trip to Las Vegas and did some sight seeing while there. The Hoover Dam was top on our list. Seeing this structure is amazing as well as overwhelming. It is huge and pictures do not do it justice. My brother and I took a couple of trips to the dam when we lived in Las Vegas and I just never get tired of going there and spending half the day walking, wandering and taking pictures. According to history, the Hoover Dam was built from 1931 to 1936. It was named after President Herbert Hoover. It took from 3,000 to 5,000 workers to complete the dam and there were 112 reported deaths associated with the building of the dam although the official count is 96 workers. You can read more about the dam and it's construction here as it's really interesting. I would have included a picture but for some reason, I can't post a picture and a link at the same time.

That seems a lot of deaths. I guess Occ Health and Safety wasn't so strict in those days.

It probably wasn't as strict as it is today. There are rumors that men are buried within the dam but there isn't anything to back it up so it's probably just rumors.

@simone10 It would make a good story at the time wouldn't it?

That's a shame you can't post both. I was there in the 70s as well with my X on our honeymoon. It was gorgeous. I got some pictures of it that are tucked away somewhere.

It really is breath taking. I don't see how they did it back in the 30's when it was all mountains.

@simone10 when people talk about time traveling, that's always been my first thought - watching how massive structures were built that are still standing today (pyramids, cathedrals, the great wall of china, etc)

I almost saw it when I visited Vegas a few years ago. We were to take a tour to the Hoover Dam but it would have made for a long day and we cancelled. Hope to visit it another time.

Thank you for sharing this. I didn't know about it. When I searched for the pictures, it does look amazing! I am sure I'd have different feeling when I go there personally. I always think the ancient construction designers and workers are really great. But it's always sad to know there are many deaths involved too.

It is amazing to see, especially knowing it was manmade.

I did the tour the first time I went but that was the only time. To me, the tour can be a little boring.

I have visited a couple of times and I agree with you that it is beautiful, even if a bit scary.

I agree that it can be scary because it is up in the mountains and the road to and from can seem a bit treacherous, especially at night.

I was to the Hoover dam also in the 1970s--in fact the first time was when I went to see Barbra Streisand as an 'opening act' for the star!!

I've never been there, but I watched a documentary about the building of the Dam. It was pretty interesting.

The building of it really is interesting and how they had to clean up Vegas in preparation for it.

I have visited it too drove over it walked over it went deep inside it. It is amazing and quite a remarkable feat of engineering. It made me a bit sad to see so many lost their lives. These guys were great pioneers and gutsy! I know they were building a road bridge to reduce the traffic going over it which collapsed and amazingly this structure is still standing after all these years. A fascinating experience!
