Do you perm your hair?

My mother-in-law just had her hair permed, as she is bored with her straight hair and she thinks it's good to change to a new hairstyle. My mom has been perming her hair since she was a teenager, it seems like it was a trend. She thinks she looks better with perm hair, so I have never seen her with straight hair. I have never perm or thought of perming my hair. I have straight hair and I like it. Moreover, I am just too lazy to take care of any other hairstyle. What about you? Do you like straight or perm hair?

I used to have my hair cut in three different levels and it was all permed. I kept that for several years. Then I cut my hair short and had it permed I remember the very first perm I ever got. The beautician didn't tell me I should wash it for several days. I came right home and washed it to get ready to go out. It was such a flop and a mess. Haven't permed for many years though.

Your beautician must have forgotten that or she assumed you know about it. Some of my friends told me how to take care of the curly hair, otherwise I would not know about it at all.

My mom permed my hair the whole time I was growing up. I couldn't wait to have straight hair. I had it long and straight for a while, then I went back to perming, now it's straight as you see in my picture.

I have friends who were forced by their mom to perm their hair when they were young as well, but my mom never allow me to perm my hair or do anything special with my hair. Your hairstyle now looks good!

@kaka135 Thank you. I've had it for a few years now, and since it's the style on the back cover of my books, I won't be changing it.

You have only permed one man's hair? So it's not popular for men to perm hair over there? I have seen some men permed their hair here, though not many.

I like straight hair, I tried once a perm, many years ago. I cut my hair short and permed them, I looked good, but finally I decided that I prefer to have my hair shoulder long and straight.

So your hair is shoulder long and straight? I always imagine you look like the avatar in your profile picture - short and a bit wavy.

@kaka135 They are very similar to the avatar, if you look well, I have no waves, the hair are cut at different lengths, on the top. Now they are a bit longer, they touch the shoulders, but I will shorten them again soon.

@LadyDuck I always think this hairstyle is pretty! Is it similar to pixie cut? There was once I watched in YouTube, how to cut pixie hairstyle ourselves, though I didn't manage to cut it right, I think it's quite fun to cut my hair differently.

I did perm mine a couple of times but that would be about 30 years ago. I go for short and straight nowadays.

I like short and straight as well, I think it's easy to take care of, though once in a while I'd keep it a bit longer.

I permed my hair back in the 80's when it was the style but have had straight hair since. I much prefer it straight.

It seems like it was trendy in those days, but not today.

Very long time ago I had my hair permed in a hair salon but I didn't like it. Since I really couldn't get used to my new look. Although others said it wasn't bad, but I still insisted in that was not suitable for me. After that, I always keep my hair straight.

Perhaps sometimes it's good to change and see if it suits you. I just couldn't imagine myself with perm hair. How long did it take to get your hair become straight again?

@kaka135 When I had perm hair, I didn't like it very much and then later I had a short haircut. After that, it did take me a long time growing long my hair.

I never thought about perming my hair but my mom occasionally does. She likes her hair curled.

@kaka135 Me either! I think it looks good for my mom! But then again, mostly her hair is curled so I am used to it.

@wiLLmaH I think nowadays going to saloon is not cheap, especially if you go for those good ones.

I don't think I could stand the smell of the chemicals. Besides I have such thick hair that it would look ridiculous if I were to perm it.

I forgot to mention about the chemical smell, I don't like them either. Every time after my mom permed her hair and came back from the saloon, I could smell the chemical. My mom always complains because she doesn't have much hair, so it looks better if she perms it.

I used to keep mine permed several years ago and I prefer it that way. But it is so bad for the hair. I find as I get older I have to be more concerned about the long term effects on my hair since it does not bounce back from damage as easily.

I heard perming hair will damage the hair from my mom since I was young, so she didn't allow me to do so, though she has been perming her hair all the time. I thought with the perming techniques nowadays, it'll be better for the hair especially if we do the hair treatment. I am not so sure about this.

@kaka135 I am sure it is better than it used to be but still not real good for it. But yes, you are right they make this stuff better all the time.

I think perm hair takes more effort to take care of. I see my mom always need to take care of her hair, and after some time, she has to go to saloon to perm her hair. I am just too lazy for all those.

I don't perm my hair. Always have it cut short for easy maintenance specially when I was working in an office.

I like mine to be short and simple as well, especially when I am taking care of two young children. I didn't even have much time to shower when they were still babies, so it's good to keep the hair short.

When it comes to hair and looks, I am very cheapo! I do not want to spend more money than necessary. if there is a way to stop hair from growing, that is great. Since there isn't, I just view it as a necessary expense, as in cutting hair, buying shampoo and conditioner.

Some people just do not concern about the appearance as much, me too! Not only because of money, but I am actually too lazy to care about those. Yes, there are some necessary expenses we just can't avoid. So do you have short hair? It certainly saves more shampoo with short hair.

When I was younger, I had crazy wavy hair so I'd get straight perms. Now my hair is less wavy and more straight so I don't get perms any more. I'm happy because I don't have to spend money any more. Straight perms were expensive.

I didn't know the wavy hair will become more straight. My younger sister has wavy hair as well, hence she liked to straight perm her hair too. Yes, it's very costly, and it takes quite a long time to get it done, right?
