~Epidural Or Natural/IV Meds?~

So, as labor comes closer to being a reality for me this is something I have been wondering about what other women have done. The doctor asked if I was going to get the epidural for labor. That was a big fat NO. I have never gotten one and never would. Here are my personal reasons for not ever wanting one: I don't want anyone messing with my spine. I feel the bond after going through serious pain is a little stronger than it would be if it was easy during labor. I like proving to myself that I can do it. With my older two children I had pain medicine in my IV when the pain got out of control. With my youngest daughter I had no medicine of any kind, I did it all natural. When you went through labor did you have the epidural or did you go the natural/pain meds through IV way?

I never gave birth or been pregnant, but watching YouTube vlogs and what not, many are now mothers! I would like to try natural and then if needed epidural or whatever doctor recommends for baby to be healthy! I hope your next delivery will go smoothly!

@infatuatedbby It is usually personal choice when it comes to the epidural. Sometimes the doctor will recommend it, but not often. With my oldest the nurses tried to push it on me because she was my first-I refused though. Thank you!

@LovingMyBabies Yes! I would personally like to try natural, as I am not someone who likes medicine, shots, or anything. I like to be cured naturally when it comes to even getting sick. But, for pain tolerance I don't know ~ I'm a little baby, lol. I am not thinking about kids yet, maybe in a few years though! But I have natural in my head as of right now!

@infatuatedbby I am such a baby when it comes to pain too so I wasn't sure if I could handle it either but I proved to myself I could do it!

With my oldest I had a shot of Demerol, but my youngest 2 were home births with a midwife. My youngest was actually born in the bathtub.

@Morethanamom I have always wanted to do at home births in water-but I didn't have the money for it. Your so lucky!

@Morethanamom I wish my insurance covered it, that would be amazing. My son was induced and that was an awful experience.

@LovingMyBabies Thankfully midwives are covered under our provincial health care, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to afford it either. With my youngest, if I didn't go into labor within a few days I would have ended up with an induction and a hospital birth. Stubborn boy waited until the last minute.

I went through all the pain too, becasue they didn't offer them when I was pregnant, as I had my kids in the 70's. I am not sure I would even if they had offered them. I know what you mean about bonding though after going through all the pain.. You forget all the pain after the baby comes, that is for sure.

@LovingMyBabies It certainly is. Is this going to be your last one? I actually gave birth to three but my one daughter suffocated in the birth canal, as the doctor woulsn't pull her out, as I wanted to push, but he wouldn' let me. I was devastated, but having two others helped me get through it.

@rosekiss Yeah once the baby is born that is all you think about is your precious angel. All of that pain is soon forgotten about. It is amazing.

I never had a baby, but now epidural is performed to everyone who undergoes surgery. My husband had surgery twice and he had epidural.

I never had a baby but I did have a spinal prior to surgery since I had eaten and they couldn't knock me out totally. It wasn't fun and if you sit up too fast you get a horrible headache which I did.

@AbbyGreenhill That sounds absolutely awful. Are you talking about a spinal tap? I have had one of those when I was 8 years old and I still remember it because its so painful!

@LovingMyBabies Yes, a spinal tap - it pluralizes you from the stomach down I had to have emergency appendectomy.

I went through natural child birth four times no pain meds whatsoever. With my fifth I did have some kind of gas through a mask because she was a breach, but never an epidural. I am like you, I don't want anyone messing with my spine..

@gr8nana6 That is awesome! The IV pain meds don't do much, you still feel it all it just makes you feel loopy. At least that's all it did for me. Messing with the spine is a dangerous thing and I cannot take the chance.

With my first they still did something called trilene, an inhaled gas to "take the edge off", problem was he was so big he was not dropping. I had a shot, and an episiotomy--I understand from my daughter where she lives they do not do that any more. Trilene did little for me except to make me stupid--I told my husband "no more babies" my friend actually got up, in her hospital gown and was going to leave the hospital. My son was about ten pounds and the doctor delivered him with forceps because I had been in labor for over 24 hours. I was in distress, my son was not. With my daughter, labor was fast, I did not get a shot, did have episiotomy as that was the basic rule then. She was delivered in six hours of labor.

@GardenGerty Oh my goodness I am glad they don't do that anymore. It sounds more scary than having nothing at all! I don't like medicine that makes me feel weird in any way. The pain meds through the IV don't do much but it does barely take the edge off which is all I really need.

@Marcyaz It is painful of course, but seeing your little angel makes that pain completely worth it to me.

@celticeagle Lol. My sister and I both did naturals too. I wouldn't ever want an epidural.
