Goodbye Vienna, Hello Czech Republic

On our tour of Europe in 2015, we spent ten days in Vienna. Once we left there we headed for the Czech Republic. We were only going through the corner of the country as we'd been told to keep our valuables with us in Prague and the large cities. We were also told that foreign vehicles were a prime target for thieves. As we had a rather large motor home it all seemed a bit too hard to try to stay safe while sight-seeing so we decided to cut across the corner of the country into Germany. I found it really stressful to cross the border and find all the signs in Cyrillic lettering. We had no Czech currency and trying to get fuel we used the wrong pin number twice before getting it right. I was beginning to think we were getting too old to be travelling! We managed to use euro in a supermarket and got the change in krone. After passing through many villages we followed signs for a camping site and came upon a lovely little lake. To our surprise many of the people spoke English and they couldn't have been more friendly. One lady taught English and was pleased for the chance to practise her skills on us. There were two nutrias or coypus in the lake. These come from South America but now seem to be found in a few places in Europe. I took photos of stone bridges. One was too low for our van and we had to make a detour. We were surprised at the great banks of solar panels. I loved the cupolas on a building in one town we went through and the painted buildings. It's just a pity I couldn't get the horizon level.

prague is one of my favourite cities. My friend used to live there and i've been many many times over the last ten years or so. It's changed quite a lot since fully coming into the eu and not for the better...full of uk stag parties now just like bratislava and riga.

It would be nice to do a tour there and be looked after rather than having to work out everything for ourselves. I'm a bit jealous that you've been so many times. :)

@JudyEv When I first went she was living in a tent at the very end of the metro line. I always stayed in one hotel in Wenceslas Square and went with her each evening to her campsite and had to rush back as it was miles away and the metro shut at midnight back then. Then she got a flat a mile or so from the old town and then i stayed there.

I'm glad I was able to be your guide for a short while. It was a bit of a pity we saw so little of it.

I guess it's really nice to find people in foreign country speak the same language as you. The stone bridges are nice. What is the photo with many "animals" there?

@JudyEv Yes, I think it can be quite hard. I have never travel to a place where I can't speak the language yet. At least quite a number of people nowadays speak English. But, I think it can be a good experience.

It can be hard to shop or get directions when you don't speak the language. The animals are just ornaments I guess. Or perhaps toys.

The people were very friendly. I wasn't sure how they'd be but really people are much the same all over the world.

The dogs are just toys. There were a lot of them as the building behind was full of them too.

Those little animals are rather odd looking. But the painted buildings are quite lovely.

I was beside myself with joy at seeing some real live coypu. I thought they were only found in South America.

I spent a week in Prague a few years ago, but the language was not a problem because English was widely spoken.

@JudyEv This is to be expected in every country because those away from the tourist areas have no reason to speak English.

I think it is only out in the country areas where not knowing the language might be a bit of a problem.

Nice slideshow. What kind of animal was that in the third or fourth frame? The tail reminds me of a rat's tail.

As I said in the discussion it's a coypu or nutria - a South American rodent. It is quite large really - at least as big as a big cat.

@judyev Now we'll have no more of this talk about being too old to travel. I met a 94 year old solo Australian lady traveller in Calcutta many yeas ago. She carried a typewriter everywhere with her. She' probably till travelling even though she would be at leas 130 by now.

How great is that? We got over our temporary lack of confidence when we met such lovely people at the lake. Every time we got near the end of our tethers we'd come across a gorgeous camping place and everything would fall into place again.

We had very few language problems but in some of the smaller country towns there were very few who spoke much English.
