It's That Time of Year Again

United States
January 19, 2016 9:42am CST
It's time for my car to go in for the state inspection and registration renewal. I already did the renewal by mail but now my car has to go in today for state inspection and it's a bitterly cold day to have to take it there. At least it's just cold and not snowing. Every year it's freezing cold (well it's January!) and I wish I had purchased my car during the warmer months so I could stay in my warm house and not have to venture out and freeze. Oh well, once it's done I won't give it another thought until next January when it's freezing cold once again

Do you have to do it every year like we do in England? Once they are 3 years old they have to be tested.

I guess next time you'll buy a car, you'll buy in a warm month?

Hopefully I won't need to purchase another car but yes, it would be a warm month that's for sure

es I just took my truck to be inspected and it passed. I really like that you can renew on the internet and not mail it in any more

Registration renewal online (or by mail) is so much easier than a trip to DMV. However, inspections still need to be done in person.

Our magic month is January too, but I only have to stop by the tag and pay, no inspections since we are so far away form the city.

@Marilynda1225 Good idea, no lines. Gotta love that. Going to the DMV is one of my least favorite things, right up there with going to license bureau for driver license stuff, yuck. Our state changed their requirements a couple years back so on their renewals EVERYBODY had to go in and show marriage licenses, birth certificates social security cards, you know everything that shows you really exist. The lines went around the room TWICE. We were in line for hours. It was awful.

@mom210 guess there are states that don't require inspections (wish mine didn't). I did my registration by mail which saved a trip to the DMV

@mom210 I can't imagine having to go through all that red tape and paperwork just for a renewal. Gosh what a headache!

I'm glad mine is due in the summer (august) so then it's warm. I always walk around outside while waiting for my car to be inspected. I hope it passes and then you can go back home where it's warm again

We had our car inspection last December, at least it was a sunny day and pretty warm.

@Marty1 The temperature cannot climb up in only two hours. Yesterday it has been cold all the day long.

I am not missing those inspection trips, nor the expensive cost of the registration. I think the last time we paid registration (2000) it was about $80, I can only imagine what it is now. Here we pay $26 and there is no inspection. Have fun....

@boiboing bringing the car for state inspection in the winter is definitely not something I thought about when I was buying it. All that was already done at the dealership so I had no worries until the following jan when it was due and soooo cold out.

My husband is in charge of all three cars. He must have it done up north, because he doesn't have to do one down here. That's his department.

We don't have to do this in Australia. It would probably be a good thing if we did.

I am glad, I don't have to worry about that. My husband is the one who drives and takes care of the car. He always complains about having to do it.
