I got ripped off (for real)! Don't let this happen to you!

You probably heard about the criminals who were following FedEx and UPS trucks around before Christmas and stealing stuff from people's doorsteps. It finally happened to me. I actually saw a suspicious looking lady in my apartment complex that day as I was driving off and didn't think about it. Yesterday, I saw on eBay that my late package had been "delivered." on or about the suspicious lady day. I checked with the front office. I checked with my neighbors. Nada. I even spoke to the UPS driver who had delivered the package. Yep, he had put it on my welcome mat, as he usually does. I asked him to toss it on my balcony table next time. If it really was that suspicious lady, she's going to be disappointed when she opens the package expecting diamonds or jewels. It was a $5 tube of Walnut Wood Filler. Heh heh. Does PayPal cover theft? Should I call the local police and let them know what the suspicious lady looked like? These are my deliberations right now. Has this ever happened to you? The bottom Line: Make an arrangement with your Fed Ex or UPS to put your package in a "safe" place if you're not signing for it.

I'm glad that she didn't get much, but I think you should report it. We never have this problem here in the UK as parcels are never left unattended. If you aren't in and none of the neighbours are available to take it in, you have to collect it from the Post Office.

As far as I can remember I have never had one stolen off my porch thankfully. Hope she enjoys the wood filler

@TheHorse Hmmm Maybe you will see her again, and can put the question to her. I can only imagine her disappointment when she opened your package. My husband would have liked it.

@fishtiger58 Her probable disappointment, and the fact that I only lost $5.05, makes the whole thing a tad amusing to me. But if she stole presents and things from other people (assuming it was her), she should be caught.

Karma will get her. She's in bigger trouble than she can imagine. It has not happened to us but we are usually around, and all big packeges need a signature. Glad to know it's something she will never use and won't be able to return. Just think Karma...

Is there an invoice in the package , anything with your CC information on it she can use. I did hear about all the thefts here in CA.
Our mail man does not leave packages on the porch, if no one is home, I request a signature on everything and make arrangements for someone to take them or for me to be here. It is happening more and more.
Even with calling the police you don't know for sure it was this woman. I have had some good drivers that will hide a package, but there could be someone watching them hide it, and not see you come out for it and take it.

@TheHorse sometimes they put the invoice, with your name number, you might want to ask the seller. I wouldn't like someone to have even my name , phone number

@CookieMonster46 Happily, I paid with PayPal, so I doubt my phone number was in there.

When I order packages, I always have them delivered to my office at work. We always have someone in our office building 7 days a week, so I can rest assured my packages will be delivered safely to my desk in my office.

@TheHorse On one hand, it's great to hear that it never happened to you before; but on the other hand, it's disheartening to know that it finally did happen to you. Now you cannot be so sure future packages won't be stolen.

@moffittjc Yes, it's one more thing to worry about. I actually spoke with the UPS guy and asked him to toss future packages onto my balcony.

About ten years ago a CanPar (Canadian equivalent of UPS) parcel I shipped to my daughter, was stolen from the apartment building lobby. (It was a common practice fore parcels to be left in the locked to non residents lobby.)
Imagine their disappointment, a couple of cans of soup, a half bottle of shampoo and a Halloween costume (cheerleader).

@Morleyhunt Had someone opened a up a small grocery story near the apartment complex, would they have gotten rich?

@TheHorse probably not. He should know, she had no way to get to a grocery store from where she was living. I drove three hours one weekend a month to take her out shopping. Once a month one of her siblings tried to do the same thing.

I would call the police station and say you had a stolen package for sure and say you saw that lady.
I have always worried about my packages getting stolen. I don't even know how to arrange for them to be placed in a safe place. I would rather just go pick them up myself.

This is the first time I've had this happen. We're in a pretty "safe" neighborhood. I've even had friends leave large stereo speakers at my doorstep. I DID call the police just now. They're going to call me back to take a report.

I think you should let the police know. Maybe that will help to stop it
