He doesn't know what he's talking about, he just guesses stuff.
Just looked at my calendar (it's a bit more reliable) and spring isn't scheduled to spring forth until sometime next month.
Plus all those floodlights...and they wake the poor guy up, fer cryin' out loud...LET HIM SLEEP! IT'S STILL WINTER!
Groundhog day...had a friend on facebook just mention a fact...ground hog belongs on pizza!

No road kill on pizza, well, maybe in the south!

@AbbyGreenhill It's kind of weird, used to see them in mine, but haven't for a long time...still get raccoons and rabbits and the occasional fox...

If you flood the poor thing with floodlights, he's absolutely BOUND to see his shadow! As his other name is 'whistle pig', the only thing he's likely to do is whistle up a wind. Has everyone forgotten that it's a LEAP year this year, so SPRING is bound to be either late or early? The only good SOURCE for a marmot is likely to be found in a stew (or marmite as such a thing is known further north and in the Land of Frogs.

My step-son turns 9 this year (according to his birth-date, anyway)
I've never understood why most people born on the 29th celebrate their birthday on the 28th when it isn't leap year...they were born on the 60th day of the year, regardless of if it is called February 29th or March 1st, but he doesn't agree with me.

@JolietJake it has to be something along the same lines of reasoning that the kindergartner is using to get us to celebrate hers a month and a half early: cake. Apparently any excuse to have cake (and eat it) early is a good one!

I never did quite understand the whole concept of groundhog day. The poor thing doesn't have to be disturbed to see or not see his shadow Spring is approximately six weeks away regardless.

Strangely enough, I actually saw a groundhog out and about in the side yard yesterday...I wonder how it knew what day it was

I would not always tell you the truth either if you woke me up for something like that

Great rant and I think they should let him sleep too.

If they woke me up with a mild electric shock and shone bright lights in MY eyes, there'd be a big fight happening...

There's a Wikipedia article on it if you wanted to look...based on old folk-lore, I assume
