My friends are heading home

Last week I wrote about foolishly leaving some clothes in the wardrobe of a hotel in which I'd been staying (the hotel, obviously, not the wardrobe - I don't generally sleep in wardrobes). I spoke to a lady from 'housekeeping' who gave me an email address to which I could send my mailing details and said they'd get it out to me shortly. They refused payment and said they'd put it in the post. Today I realised I hadn't heard anything back, so I gave them a call. The lady who'd given me the email address hadn't been entirely sure about how to spell her colleagues name, so I wanted to make sure the message had got through. My clothes - much loved old friends - are in the post and heading home and I will be giving the hotel a much better Tripadvisor rating than I would have done if I'd not had to test their housekeeping help. So the star I knocked off for the terrible room service vegeburger that had me up half the night, can go back on for the fantastic help from the ladies in housekeeping. And best of all, I don't have to take a big detour to drive over there tonight after work.

I always thought everyone slept in wardrobes. Glad you will be receiving your clothes and the housekeeping there must be fantastic. Give them an excellent review.

Some of those american walk-in closets are bigger than a lot of UK bedrooms.

Thats so nice of them. I dont know if this will happen at my place, the chances are less and I didnt had an experience like this. I think you should have aware about the veg burger to them too. Also be careful with your things next time.

@aju007 I think most house keeping staff in India are terrified of being accused of stealing things so they want to make absolutely sure you don't want it before they take it.

You might be surprised. My husband sometimes takes his old T-shirts and underwear to India when we go on holiday and then abandons them as he goes around the country. Quite often someone from housekeeping will chase him around the car park trying to give back the clothes that he has tried to throw away.

Let me see what you will write in the review...this is one hotel you should leave back some clothes in the wardrobe...or at least pretend to, and ask them to send those clothes over. You will be delighted with the housekeeping help. They are gems. Your clothes will return to you. You would have saved yourself some gas charges. So here come my two additional stars, one for gas saved and another for housekeeping. The rest three are for room service and whatever...

Fantastic suggestion. "Leave your clothes but never order the vegeburger"

Hmm, sounds like I missed something. Let me see if I got this. Some of your clothes were left behind? And the hotel is sending them to you now? If so, that is wonderful.

It was terrible. It was a chick pea based burger served in a bun with......absolutely nothing. No butter on the bun, no slice of tomato or piece of lettuce or little portion of ketchup. Not even salt and pepper.

Glad you're getting your clothes back. So many times these things get confused and you lose items you like.

I'm very relieved too. I was so happy when she said they had already been put in the post.

The housekeeper is required to turn in personal items to the lost and found. Once the guest contacts the hotel about the lost items arrangements are made to either send them or have the guest pick them up. I've come across quite a few items of clothing and other things.

I noticed you mentioned in your post on room cleaning about checking the back of the bathroom door. I bet that's responsible for lots of stuff getting left behind.

What a relief. I once left my camera and another time a pair of shoes. One hotel where my hubs and I both left our jackets actually called me before we left town so we were able to drive back. I know the feeling you are feeling!!

You were lucky, I forgot some clothes in the wardrobe of the Disney Hotel in Anaheim (CA), I called them and sent them an email and my clothes were never sent back to me.

@boiboing I agree and I want to add that at that Disney Hotel I experienced the worst service of all time and it was even expensive.

I lost a nightdress in a US hotel - they took it by mistake - and the staff weren't even willing to check the laundry room or call the laundry service. Different attitudes.

I'm not at home at the moment but hopefully they'll be waiting for me when I get back. It's lucky I did it in my home country where the postage wasn't too bad

You don't "generally" sleep in a wardrobe? Need to elaborate that..... That was nice of them to be this accommodating and helpful.. Some just don't care.....

I hadn't been overly impressed by the hotel during my stay but they really improved my impression of the place with their post-check out behaviour.

Me too. At first I was resigned to just losing it and then I snapped out of it and rang the hotel and they were very helpful.
