I Hope you are Enjoying Success Wherever you are!

I wrote the above in a reply to someone recently and thought it would make an interesting topic for a MyLot discussion. Wherever you are: This could be interpreted as a physical location, such as Bangkok, Thailand, or it could be interpreted as the job you are doing. Another interpretation for a writer may be the sites they are writing at. What a multitude of possibilities. Enjoying success: Many people make an immediate assumption that success means money and great income, but there are many ways to look at success, the painter may have professional pride in painting great walls eventhough the money he earns isn't that great. A mother could consider herself successful in the way she brings up her kids. How do you look at this question? What is your measure? Where are you? How is it going? I Hope you are Enjoying Success Wherever you are!

In my view success means being useful to society and being happy as only a happy person can make another happy. Some people may associate contentment with being lazy but for me we can strive hard and yet be contented. I like also to associate success with being in control of our lives and living life with a positive and never-say-die spirit - siva

Siva I don't see contentment as being lazy, we all need to be there once in a while, even if it is while pausing before chasing after the next great success.

If you had asked me these questions 20 years ago, I suspect that my answers would have been very different than they are today--I have had my hat in a number of arenas over time--and still do in some--as I get older, I find that my personal relationships become more and more important--and my "successes" out in my professional life, a little less so--

That is the point of success though, it is to a large extent what you make of it.

I see myself as being successful. I am doing what I love to do. I am able to spend time with my family and friends and I am there when they need me. Many people would look at my life and think the opposite. But, I am happy with it.

I would say that doing what you love is important. I would disagree with those other people and agree with you.

@whiteream I try to be happy wherever I am and under whatever conditions. I have had a lot of money and I have had nothing, I have had jobs I love and ones I hate. Personal happiness is often more important than those traditional signs of success such as wealth and power.

@pgiblett I have had people tell they could never be happy do what I do I. I just don't understand. I have a nice place to live, food on the table, and a happy healthy family. Now, I am not rich or even well off but I am happy and to me, you make your own happiness. I know, people who walk around miserable all the time. They have money but hate their jobs and other things. If, you are not happy you should try to make small changes to make yourself happy.

My measure of success is having peace in my heart, being content with my lot, and enjoying family and friends

I love such success measures. There are always more things to go for but contentment matters a lot, I am with you there.

I am caused to wonder how being a frustrated writer counts as a success, I would have thought removing frustration would be essential.

Wherever you are I take to mean usually as literally where the person lives. Enjoying success is trickier to answer I think. It can mean something different to everyone. To me success isn't as much to do with money as life in general. I do not however feel very successful because I don't work and think people look down on me for it.

With wherever you are I said this could mean physical location (like Tampa Bay) but it could also mean in cyberspace or it could mean how you exist in your own mind. I disagree that because you don't work you cannot enjoy success. You should ignore how others think, they have no right to look down on you.

It is necessary for me not to feel guilty about my success. So I am not going to climb the ladder by pushing the other person out. Second thing is, I have been through some really tough times, so my satisfaction level is much lower. I become happy even with very little more than what I need or asked for. :) I want to remain humble and not end up in the competitive world where we have to compete with others for just about everything be it how large is your home, what type of jewelry are you wearing, how often do you repeat a dress, which car do you own..etc.

No person should feel guilty bout the things they have done to help them succeed, in fact most people do not celebrate them enough. I also oppose the concept that the only way to climb the ladder is to push someone else out, I have had some amazing successes in my life and never pushed anyone else out of the way to get their.

where you are can be a state of mind - people can be unhappy in the most exotic glorious locations while I can be happy in a muddy field too - nice and warm indoors now though

That is precisely why I left the choice of where you are to be wide open, although most respondents have ignored that question. What may be exotic for you may not be for another person (hence why they may be unhappy). I like the muddy field concept, I remember cross country running as a kid and loving the muddy field when running.

That is the beauty of success, it is something that we control for ourselves - it is what we wish it to be.

It also made me think "wherever you are in life", such as starting a new relationship or moving up in your career or buying a home or retiring. I agree that the definitions of success vary widely. I would say that if you are happy with your life, you are successful, regardless of how much or how little you may have in someone else's eyes.

All of those are perfectly applicable. "If you are happy with your life, you are successful" - that is a great thought, although I know a few success trainers that may disagree with such a thought, but I find it perfectly acceptable, even commendable.
