Giving Tip when ordering To Go at Restaurants

I ordered some take out today for lunch and there are two options - "curbside" where you park in a designated parking spot and call to have your food delivered out to you or "to go/take out" where you park and walk in to get your food.
What are your thoughts about giving tip when ordering to go at restaurants? I never use "curbside" because I feel it is faster for me to go inside anyway. I generally just tip $1 when I order to go at Restaurants for the persons time to bag my food, utensils, and condiments.

Curbside would require the people to go out and bring to the car. I think if they do that ~ I would have to give more tip, so I go inside instead.

@SIMPLYD Yes, me too! I can park and walk a few steps to pick up my food. I am in no hurry.

I rarely tip unless I get really good service.

I never received great service for to go! I usually have to always ask for utensils and condiments (like ketchup). One time, I ordered "soup" and they said they don't offer any spoons for take out.....

We have not ordered take-out since we left New Jersey 15 years ago. But, since you asked, I don't think take-out should require a tip. At Sonic, for instance, where they del. the food, maybe a small tip.

Really!? No take out! Do you often prefer making food at home or just dining at restaurants instead?
During cold nights or lazy nights, I like to bring food home to eat and watch tv at home.

@infatuatedbby I don't eat fast food, we don't have a restaurant closer than 30 mins away...so eating at a restaurant is the way to go for us. I keep saying it - I live in the boonies.

I wouldn't tip the same amount for a take out order as I would if I was eating there but a small tip would be sufficient for the person who actually bagged up the order

I agree! I don't tip the same as eating there ~ other wise I'd eat there. I tip $1-2 depending.
At least a dollar for the person who bagged the order!

At restaurants I do tip.
But since I am ordering take out and walking instead without any sort of special delivery ~ I just give a dollar and change usually.

I don't tip for any takeaway type place.
Just for table service and stuff that is delivered.
Tipping isn't as big of a deal in the UK (in my opinion) as it is in some places.

I should do that! Not tip! I feel bad, but then again I don't make much anyway. They are being paid hourly and it isn't so bad to bag things up right? I know when I was a hostess, I didn't always get tips. But sometimes if my food isn't ready yet or I get good service I'll give a $1 or so.

@infatuatedbby Most restaurants have already included service charge in your bill actually so it is better to check first although if your heart desires to give again there is no problem with that.

@salonga Yes, I agree. Important to check because some places do tip differently.

OH yes! I don't either. That would be double tip for them, lol. I had a co-worker who didn't know the restaurant charged tip service already, so she tipped again! Then, when she got home she realized she double tipped.

I think so too! If I give them more, I rather eat there then.
All they have to do is bag everything from the kitchen and ring up the check.

I don't do curbside, but if I did ~ I'd tip because the person has to come out, then run back in to get change or the receipt after swiping the card.
But I did not know they charge an extra amount for bagging. Do you live in the States? I never noticed an extra charge.

Usually your tip is for the services a restaurant staff give you over and above making the food. When we pick up take out, we don't tip. If we sit down and eat we do.

I sometimes feel bad if I don't give some sort of tip. But I know what you mean, take out, no tip and if we sit down, we eat it is a given to tip.

It depends. I find that knowing these workers rely on tips to earn a living wage, makes me a little more generous.

I agree, but now the minimum wage has increased a $1 here.

@infatuatedbby here any food services have a lower minimum wage than other jobs...not fair. They are expected to make it up in tips...to me that should not be the purpose of tips.

Yes, of course! If the person is rude or doesn't offer to give me napkins or utensils and I have to ask or has an attitude ~ I will not tip (if I am taking take out)!

I don't tip for takeout service, there is no service. I do tip 20% when I am waited on however.

I only tip at sit-down restaurants. I haven't even seen a "curbside" place in years and years. I'm not sure what I would do at one of those.
