My Treasures Found On The Beach and Mermaid's Tears

Canada
February 8, 2016 8:16am CST
I have enjoyed walking the beach daily. It is miles long with a few huge piers. I haven't made it all the way to the pier walking, but we did drive to one of the piers to watch the fishermen and fisherwomen doing their thing. It's been very windy so we didn't stay on the pier long. Those fishing were dressed for winter... While walking the beach I look for treasures. Sand dollars are my favorite but always in pieces. Lots of shells to find too. I always bring bags of shells home and most end up in my garden. On the shore of Lake Ontario I pick up treasures too. Drift wood and mermaid's tears. I love the colors of the mermaid's tears and have jars full. Do you know what mermaid's tears are?

@PainsOnSlate Thanks - I looked at the link and found it interesting. I've never seen one, but mermaids' tears are another matter. I just know them as sea glass.

I miss looking for seaglass on the North Shore Paints. I was just looking for it the other day online. My fav piece that I found was pink glass..I did not take them with me when I left due to airport restrictions.

I never thought about an airline not allowing them on board. Better safe than sorry I guess...but I would have buried them in a jean pocket and see what happens

I often beach comb when near the ocean. Always hoping to find real washed up treasure but shells and interesting rocks are nice. I have collected sea glass.

I do not know about mermaid's tears and so will be doing a swagbucks search to add to my knowledge as well as to provide some fodder for another eventual reward from SB.

Once I picked up a large seashell which is the kind that you can listen to the sound of the sea. I kept it for a long time before I threw it away when I moved to this house.

@PainsOnSlate I grew up tidepooling most days during the summer--my sister and I would head down to the rocks when the tide was out--so shells remind me of those days!

I've never heard of Mermaid tears before, but then it's probably because the desert wouldn't be a great place for mermaids

@JohnRoberts I first found them on the shore of Lake Ontario. I was impresses with the colors, blue was my favorite although I picked up all colors. I read a book, the title long forgotten (fiction) that mentioned mermaid's tears so since then, that's what I call them
Sea glass is often called "Mermaid Tears." Here is the legend of the mermaid tears and why people call sea glass mermaids tears. Legend of Mermaid Tears. The maidens could change the mighty course ...

@PainsOnSlate I never heard of sea glass being referred to as mermaid tears. You can find small bits of sea glass along the Oregon coast. Sea Glass Beach near Fort Bragg on the Northern California coast is the best in the world. there's tons of it. However, the best piece I found was a large bottle bottom polished by the sea near Santa Barbara.

Mermaid's tears are bits of glass roughed up so they are smoothe, ..from people tossing bottles in the lakes, the big lakes and are also found on the shores of the ocean. I've never found them on the beach of the ocean but the Great Lakes have tons of them.

I love the beach and have searched for sea glass on Ontario's shores, also. I love sea glass and did not know they were called mermaid's tears but it is a really beautiful name for them. I have also found perfect oval stones but I think it was from Lake Superior.

I have jars full of sea glass. Some times I find creative ways to use it, but mostly it just sits there. Ontario and Erie are the only greats I've played in, both are beautiful.

I love coral. In Mexico along the beaches the walls were made out of coral, so beautiful. Brought a few small pieces home in my jean pockets in my luggage, so if I got caught I could say...oops.
