My Guilty Valentine Secret.

I have two older sisters and when we reached our teens and they started getting Valentine's cards, I felt really left out. So I remedied that by sending one to myself.
I wasn't even interested in boys at that stage, I just wanted them to be interested in me - or at least to make my sisters think they were.
I don't know if they guessed or not, but I never confessed my guilty secret.
I have to tell you that was the only Valentine's card I ever received - sad but true! I have been happily married for 50 years, and in all that time I have never received one from my husband! Then again, I haven't sent him one either. It's just something we've never done.
So do I feel deprived at not getting a card? - naah! I've had plenty of love in my life, and still have it. I may not have a romantic husband, but I've got a good one.
What's this - no Valentine?
Where are the roses and wine?
Their lack is no loss
I don't give a toss,
I have a good man, and that's fine.

So you were wicked in your own way (lol) Great limerick there (*switches off the recording)
The Mills and Boon novels that I read made me blind to the way my husband showed his love - washing dishes when the maid was not around and doing so many other chores which I took for granted until realisation dawned on me that red roses are nothing compared to this.
Valentine's Day anyway was never celebrated here until may be in the last few years.

@jaboUK And now it is not just between couples but with parents and children, friends the works.

@allknowing I'm so glad that you came to appreciate your husband properly. That's interesting about this day not being celebrated in your country until recently - MALUSE said the same thing about Germany.
As you can tell from the fact that I was a silly young girl in that I sent a card to myself, it's been celebrated for a long time here. It wasn't so commercialised then though.

@allknowing They are missing the point - St Valentine is the patron saint of lovers.

there are so many other ways to show a persons love than to get a valentine card, and to me there much more fun and enjoyable

@hostessman We must show our love at every instance possible instead of waiting for a single day in a year. That does not make sense to me.

Some years we pick up dollar store cards, others we don't. It's not a big deal. Either way, like you, I have a keeper.

We don't celebrate Valentines Day either at my insistence. My husband tells me he loves me everyday and I tell him. We don't need a day to remind us to do that.

That's totally awesome @fishtiger58 & @jabo
Valentines is no more than a commercialization of love rather than having anything to do with actual love.

@fishtiger58 As you say, if you love one another that's enough., though I wouldn't begrudge anyone else getting the whole flowers and chocolates thing if that's what they like.

9 years of being with my boyfriend, I got one card - no flowers. He said everyone he gave flowers to - doesn't last relationship wise lol.

I've got a good man but I suffered 10 years with a bad one! I am happy that my husband and I do exchange cards and we usually buy them at the same time - For an anniversary a year ago we both the identical card!

@AbbyGreenhill That bad experience with your first husband must make you appreciate the one you have now all the more. Funny that you both got the same card.

@Tampa_girl It's not really necessary if you live in the same house, is it?

I got a few valentines back in the day when I was at school.
Then I had a few when I've had girlfriends in the past.
This year I won't get any as nobody knows my address and I won't be sending any.
That being said I'm a massive fan of romcom films and books
Not many are lucky enough to be in your position...I may be a little jealous

@Mike197602 Sorry you haven't got anyone at the moment Mike, but at least you've had someone in the past. You surprise me with you liking the romcoms.

Love the poem. :)
I'm glad you are happy with your husband. Valentines Day can be a sweet idea but it seems a bit forced anyway and just a gimmick for stores to make more money.

@VivaLaDani Thanks for coming back again for this one, and what you say is true - it's too commercialised. (Did you sort your own problems out?)

@jaboUK I find your discussions interesting to read. So, I make sure that I read them. I only missed one about immigrants. I had no knowledge on the subject matter so I missed it.
