Jumping in the Pocket Letter Swap Craze

United States

I just discovered pocket letters by reading a blog post from a blogging friend of mine. I was intrigued and asked her more about it. She suggested I look at pocket letters on Facebook and get some ideas. Then we could swap. I did and then made one and sent it to her the day after she sent one to me. The photo is of the one I received. There are lots of little goodies in the pockets and it was so fun to get it in the mail. Truthfully, I'm tired of just getting advertisements in the mail and I wanted to do something about it. Now I have made another swap with someone that I've never met and I can't wait to see what she sent! Have you made, seen or ever heard of pocket letters?

I think it sounds like a lot of fun but not something I have time to think about right now.

Is this what I think that it is, a sheet of 9 pockets each containing some trinket or souvenir from another country?

Yes, in a way. They share scrapbooking materials with their swap partner. But there is a correspondence included and artistic design in creating an interesting PL. Some have a big design on one side and all the goodies bundled behind them that show on the other side.

@Jeanniemaries Quite a novel idea and is likely to generate some fascinating material at times.

@Asylum I hope so. I think pinterest is awash in pocket letter ideas too. My friend keeps all of hers in a binder that she will enjoy looking through for a long time to come.

Oh this is something I would totally get into if I had the time! When I was a kid, I had pen pals. When I was a young adult, I collected rubber stamps and we exchanged all sorts of mail art around the world. It's nice to see things have evolved to "pocket letters" now - that is so cute! I'll definitely look into it - sounds like fun!!

Even if I wasn't doing it I like seeing the ones that people are swapping. Another thing that is new is Artist Trading Cards, or ATC's for short. I'm looking into that, I love them! If you ever want to swap art, let me know!

@Jeanniemaries Say, have you heard of Art O Mat? It's not trading, but it's a specific sized little art that is sold in vending machines. I guess people actually collect these art pieces! They used to accept submissions, but I don't know what the process is now because I'm sure they're pretty popular. That would be fun too!

@much2say I've never heard of that. Sounds interesting, but I wonder what kind of vending machines?

I am currently making up some art trading cards called ATC's just to take with me to give out. You sign your cards and who knows where they may end up (besides the waste bin!) But you wouldn't give them to just anyone, but to friends, maybe include one with a gift, in a thank you card as I have done, as a door prize or just sharing. If I knew about these last week I would have brought one for Isobelle when we met up for tea.

It does sound like so much fun, but at this time of the year we get enough mail as it is, with tax time approaching, so I wouldn't want to do it just now.

It might be something fun for the slower months of the year, like summer time...when the livin' is easy!

Here is the other side of the above pocket letter
I hadn't either until I saw the blog post a couple of weeks ago. Then I tried to join a group on facebook...still waiting and they have over 7K members. I did join one called Pocket Letters for Beginners with only 2,114 members. The one I received had a travel theme. The one I sent had a pop art theme.

My two photos open up each shows a side of the pocket letter I received. Many use scrapbooking materials to make their pocket letters. I like to be a bit more creative than that.

Nope, none of the above. Interesting idea though. There's something else going around with postcards or something like that. You sign up with an organization and send a postcard to someone anywhere in the world that participates and get one in return from another member. I don't do that either, but found it intriguing. Maybe something to do after retiring if that ever takes place.

I think it appeals to the creative side of me. I needed a reason to begin to be crafty again. I do paint but crafts are very satisfying for me.
