Credit Card with Chip - Fail First Attempt At Target Self Checkout

United States

Since my boyfriend and I are doing a little Belated Valentine's Day/Belated Anniversary sometime this week - I wanted to stop at Target to pick up some ingredients to make chocolate covered strawberries, one of my favorite desserts. All you need are the strawberries and chocolate chips of your choice. A few days ago, I was tempted to purchase some at Whole Foods but it was $2.49 each and I could make a dozen for literally less than $7 so I didn't but right now no where has strawberries on sale! The lines at Target was rather long this evening so I went to the self checkout in hopes of beating the lines. And, I just ended up wasting more time. I have a few credit card with chips but it was my first time using the card at Target. For some strange reason the keypad kept saying "fail" / "cancel". I had to flag down a team member who wasn't able to assist me on that register so I had to move over to the return center where they rung me up and I was able to use my card then. What an inconvenience. Do you have the credit card with a chip or debit card with a chip? Ever experience any troubles? There are also some places that aren't up to date with chips too!

@jstory07 Totally! @Mike197602 just mentioned in his area they have contactless cards where you just wave your card if its under a certain amount like $30 or less and no pin is needed. We don't even have that yet.

@infatuatedbby I thought it'd be the other way around. I think they've been around here for at least 8 years. We now have contactless cards for small purchases of (i think) £30 or less where you just wave the card over the machine and it pays

@TiarasOceanView Target has had a few problems in the past like the breach so it could just be Target.

I have a new debit card with a chip and I have a credit card with one. I haven't used either yet so can't say I've had any troubles. Thanks for the heads up, I always go to self checkout.

I have the chips on my debit and credit card too but haven't used it til' today. The team member said they have been frequently having trouble and unsure why for the self checkout. I don't know if I was unlucky part but it was my first time and it was a fail! I will be standing in the line next time until all these companies catch on with the chip cards.

@infatuatedbby I hope they catch up soon because we need all the security we can get with our cards. You remember I just had my debit card stolen hence the new debit card.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes, I remember the ordeal with your debit card stolen. I had mine stolen last year (credit card though). So hopefully all the stores will pick up with the system.

Some stores are not set up to take the chip card and some are. So far it is not working right or working all the time.

Yup, I agree - not all stores are set up. There are still bugs from the chip cards.

I have one card with a chip. It works at some retailers and not at others. When it doesn't work, they tell me to slide it. It works that way. Crazy!

Now that I have the chip - I can't slide the card. I tried and it was denied. But I agree, not all retailers have the chip yet.

Mostly we don't have trouble using our card. Isn't it amazing how, as soon as you want to hurry, you seem to strike problems that hold you up.

Exactly! Then, I don't carry much cash and was shy like 50 cents so I had to wait..

I don't know much about the chips yet. I don't have any cards with them yet, but I hear my bank will go to them soon.

They are converting soon if you don't have any chips yet. Or, like me - I called and requested to have a new card.

@infatuatedbby I would have to research them...like I said, I don't know much about them. I wouldn't want to have issues like you did...

I haven't experienced any problems with my debit/credit cards (both with chips) at supermarket self checkouts. It has to be an issue with your local Target store. Good move with the chocolate strawberries.

I am glad you haven't experienced any problems! It was my first try, and it didn't go well. Hopefully next time I won't have any problems. I will make some chocolate strawberries this week. My boyfriend is excited ha-ha.
