Did You Go Back Home?

When we are younger we often dream of growing up and moving away from the boring town we live in. Our eyes are always pointed to the greener grass. I moved out of my home town when I was 17 and I still live another county over. I did move back for a few years but left again as soon as I could. I have been settled here in this neighboring county for several years and I would not even phantom the thought of moving back home. What about you? Do you live where you grew up or did you sprout wings and fly away?

No, I live in another country. I was born in Italy, I moved to France with my husband a couple of years after we married and ten years ago from France we moved to Switzerland. I would not go back to my big native city.

I love that you have lived so many places!! It would be nice to travel to each of those countries. Which do you like the best?

@Shellyann36 I love all the three countries, every one has something special. Switzerland is a good place where to retire because it is a safe and quiet country with excellent medical facilities.

I sprouted wings as soon as I was old enough. The ink wasn't even dry yet on the documents my dad signed allowing me to go in the Navy when I packed my bags and left.

@just4him sounds as if you could not wait to leave. Did you get to see much of the world while in the Navy?

@Shellyann36 I was stationed in San Diego where I met my husband. He then got stationed on Guam, that was beautiful. I was out by then. And then it was back to San Diego where he was until he got out and we returned to the Midwest - he was from the Chicago area. So not a lot of the world. I did do Boot Camp in Maryland.

@just4him I think Guam would have been wonderful. I live in a military town and when my older boys were younger one of their friends (military family) went to Guam for a couple of years. Had some neat pictures to share on FB.

I live in the next town over from where I grew up so I didn't go but 5 miles away. I am a homebody, I wander but I always return.

It is good that you enjoy your home town. Most of my cousins stayed as well. Sometimes I miss the fact that my kids did not get to grow up with that close cousin bond like I did but I must admit that now that I am older the cousin bond has been gone a long time.

I call myself a homebody too, but wherever I'm living is my home even if not in my native town.

I lived in my hometown until about 6 years ago. After moving away, I found that I had no interest in moving back home. But, we did move back for about a year and moved away again. If I had a choice, I wouldn't ever move back home.

I love my family but other than them there is nothing in the area for me. I would never move back either.

I flew away. Went to collage, married and moved from NY to,Kansas, lived there all, over the state for 25 years with two years away one in Indiana and one in Missouri, then moved to Canada. Canada was closer to where I grew up so saw my parents more.

@PainsOnSlate It is good that the kids were able to visit the grandparents. I think every child should know them if they are alive. Glad it worked out so well for your family.

@Shellyann36 we made the trip home to NY and Mass every summer to see our parents. Our children got to know them and that was a good thing. Both of our parents visited Kansas too. That was a surprise.

I moved out of the town I grew up in when I was 20. My parents still lived there at the time. They have since passed away so I have no reason to go there. I now live about 25 miles south of there.

I think its nice to be close enough to visit or get there in case of an emergency. I love my family but I also like my privacy.

I left home when I was 18 and never went back except to visit. I would not want to go back there either as I like where I ended up in all my travels.

I guess if the family ties are strong it might be easier to go back. I love my parents but my Granny has passed on and without her the rest of the family (aunts, cousins) just seem different somehow. I don't miss them and really don't like going to see most of them. Don't be so sad.

Oh no way no how, I am about 15 hours from my home and have no desire to ever go back. I left at 17 and have not lived there since. My mother is still there but comes to visit twice a year.

I don't live but an hour or so away from my hometown but I hate going back. I would much rather have my family over here and cook for them at my house.

@Shellyann36 I am kinda the same way, first nobody can handle 12 extra people in their house, so we cannot stay with anybody. It would be to expensive to get a hotel, we would have to get 2. So we just wait for people to come here, usually on their way to vacation in FL.

I think we all make our mark for ourselves, in a different place. Nothing wrong with living in the same place but I think, I prefer to holiday in my home town.

@paigea Somewhat like my same situation. I like living close but not too close to be included in the family drama that goes on with my aunts/cousins etc. I have pretty much avoided them for years. I love my parents and sisters but I don't like the drama that comes with the rest of the family.

I grew up in West Virginia and flew away, first to Pennsylvania to go to college, and then to North Carolina to settle down. I did stay within driving distance, at least.

What made you decide on North Carolina? I was born and raised here and thought about moving to Florida once, even had a job lined up but I could not find an affordable place to live. I still think about moving out of NC every once in a while but I don't think it will be any time soon.

@AliCanary I grew up in Chatham County. I was born and raised there. I love Wilmington! If I could move to the beach I most certainly would. Chatham County has two sides, a very nice side and a side where all of the factories are located. I am afraid I lived on the factory side. Pollution galore going on. If I had lived on the other side of the county I doubt I would have ever moved....

@Shellyann36 - My older sister lived in Wilmington for a while (she has since relocated to Chatham County), and I would visit her sometimes wen I was in high school and college. I loved the weather and the people, and it was certainly more affordable than Philadelphia, so we just picked up and moved down here!

I was glad to see your name scrolling through some older posts and hope you will post here. I enjoyed keeping up with you. Anyway, by no choice of my own we moved to OKC in my first marriage. We stayed 2 years then moved back home.

@marsha32 I am finally back. I have been swamped the last few months. In March, April and the first week of May I dealt with asthma, bronchitis and pneumonia in the household. I got sick with pneumonia myself. I am back now! I have been to OKC, not exactly where I would want to live. Other parts of Oklahoma are not that bad though. Good to see you here!

I did stay in the city where I grew up for the first twenty-six years of my life before moving away. I then spent several years in different states around the county and also attended a bible type college in Kansas for two years. I believe God told me to return to my home area and here I am still. We'd like to move further south, but can't until all our bills are paid off, so I don't know if it's a pipe dream or a possibility just yet. By the way, I think you wanted fathom not phantom? You probably were working toward that and the spell check hadn't a clue of your idea? I'll remove this portion of the comment once you fix that, if you so choose.
