You've heard of Top Gun, but what about Top Dog?

A dog is man's (or woman's) best friend. Our Ruby is more my husband's dog, but I forgive her for that! But it's time to call a dog a dog and I'm calling mine America's favorite. According to the American Kennel Club - for the 25th consecutive year - the Labrador Retriever has been named America's favorite dog! No surprise here! Ruby is our second lab and we had Abby prior to her for 13 1/2 years. You can't ask for a more loyal family dog and one that excels at hunting as well. If you have kids and want a dog, you can trust a lab for sure. I am never surprised that the lab is number one - I would be more surprised if it wasn't.

I watch the dog show every year and it is amazing to see all the different breeds. Some new ones this year.

I always miss that dog show. I like the contests - the diving ones..Ruby could win oe of those she's an amazing jumper...plus she swims underwater.

I guess Ruby will probably be our last dog. I tried to talk my husband into a puppy but he's not buying it.

When we first started coming to TN on vacations we were told labs were hard to find - I guess they found them because it seems everyone has one.

my baby
What a cute picture. I love dogs but my baby is a small one. I live in a trailer can't have a big dog. But, your baby is very sweet looking.

That kind of consistency is impressive. I have always like labs although I am not a dog person in general.

How true labs are a fine dog I have had two of them and my third is part lab. They are really good with families and for retrieving things and are easily trainable.

Yes they are - and they put on the saddest 'lab look' I've ever seen.

My top dog is no breed at all, she was a rescue dog. She's a big brown dog with lovely eyes and a gentle face. Not such a gentle nature as she does not allow people she doesn't know into the house, she is a guard dog really. We have developed a bond and I frequently whisper into her ear that she is my 'top dog'. She knows, but I think she likes to hear a soft loving voice telling her that she is special because she raises her head until our noses are almost touching and she lifts her paw for a tickle.

I think dogs understand a lot more than some people think they do. Thanks for rescuing her.

Labs are lovely dogs I agree. Our dog was a cross between an Old English Sheepdog and a lab - we loved her to bits. We had her for 16 years.

Wow, 16 years is amazing especially for a large dog. You were very lucky.

@jaboUK I know that feeling - we did that almost 5 years ago and not a day goes by that I don't cry for her. But I know like you we gave her love and a wonderful life.

Yes, they're a very dependable favourite. I just sponsored a black lab who'll be trained to be a guide dog for a blind person.

@fishtiger58 Not necessarily true.. that depends on the breed. My parents lab couldn't walk up steps his hips got so bad. They didn't have the meds back then that we have now. Our prv. lab, Abby, had hip displasia for over 10 years and lived on meds or we would have had to do the alternative which we didn't' want to do.

@AbbyGreenhill Her two dogs didn't live really long either. She told me the bigger the dog the shorter their lives. That I didn't know.

i adore labs myself 'n've had quite a few o'er the years. the only drawback bein' they're prone to chewin' 'n diggin' to nearly no avail. the red pup out back's part lab 'n he's got holes dug all 'round - some 3' deep'r better. but he's a sweet, loyal friend who keeps a careful watch o'er the place :D
