My Offering for the Fireworks Photo Challenge

@kevin1877UK issued a challenge for photos of fireworks so I thought I'd share this. Fireworks are banned in Australia but the professional shows put on from time to time make a wonderful spectacle and are looked forward to with great anticipation. This photo was taken on Australia Day, 26th January, this year. We were fortunate enough to watch the fireworks from a friend's boat on the Swan River in Perth, Western Australia. We slept on the boat and sailed gently back to harbour next morning.

@JudyEv I guess it because of how dry it can be there, same for California only special displays.

Wow, stunning. I don't go to see fireworks anymore, I've lost interest, but I can recall trying to capture them on film with absolutely no success back in the days when I did.

It's not the camera as much as it is the photographer @JudyEv capturing fireworks is like capturing lightening, it's in the timing as much as it is the camera.

@rebelann I suppose that's true but there were so many fireworks that night it would have been hard NOT to photograph them.

@JudyEv I know that they are in a big box, all my "non digital" photos are in albums stored in two big boxes in the basement. I should take the time to scan them.

@AnneEJ I'd never heard of competitions until a day or so ago when someone mentioned one on here. The traffic sometimes puts us off going to things too.

@JudyEv Here in Montreal, they have competitions once a week through the summer, but I have never gone. I don't want to drive at night and traffic is bad after the performance.

@JudyEv Yes, smell of the gunpowder. I get to smell that when we do target shooting, and it's just as loud as fireworks LOL

Australia is smart in banning fireworks. Our service organizations sell them. I think this is insane. Hundreds of people lose their homes and are injured each year in the U.S. by fireworks.

@JudyEv When I was on a city commission where I lived years ago, we tried to get them banned, but the public service groups put up a huge fight. The irony was absurd.

We spent all day on the boat more or less waiting for the evening. But there were aerobatic displays and other entertainment on the water as well.

Here, they shoot fireworks off the top of Pikes Peak on New Years Eve. Since we live at the foot of the mountain, we just walk out the door to see them.

We have relations who live on a hill overlooking the capital and they get a wonderful view of the fireworks.
