Please, I Don't Want to Die!

After months (3) of neglect. Few visits, no one talking to me, no one providing me with nourishment, I don't want to die. The handwriting is on the wall. I don't fit into anyone's plans! All of my pals at the next table have already been sent out to compost. This must be the response of the Christmas Cactus. Last week, when I started moving most of my mother's plants into the compost, I couldn't help noticing the blossoms on the Cactus. In a last ditch attempt to stave off annihilation, it is full of blooms. I have relented. The plant has been given a stay of execution. At least until it is finished blooming.

Poor thing. Can't you find it a spot somewhere in your garden? I'm sure it would reward you.

I think they are a tropical type plant, they wouldn't do well outside during the cold winter months, I don't think.

How many plants can I keep. I already have my father to nurture and water, umm feed. Now you want me to add another chore to my list. Nope, the plant must go.

But what if I don't want to care for this plant? If it was smart it would just hurry up and die.

Do not throw the plant, if nobody wants it, just put it outside in a place where it is a bit repaired by the cold and can get water from the sky. May be it will survive.

@Morleyhunt Poor little plant, I hope you can find a place where to keep it alive.

It would survive the spring, summer and early fall outside. Then the first hard frost would annihilate the plant.

@LadyDuck I could set it outside right now. It would have frozen before lunch.

It does look pretty, but I don't have room for any mor plants. When the house gets emptied, the plant goes.

My mother had hundreds if not thousands of plants. I have looked after finding homes for many. Now I am putting all the leftovers into the compost. Why did the cactus pick this moment to bloom.

This plant actually thrives on neglect. I had one that I ignored for four months (I put it outside under a tree) and then brought into the house to be watered on a regular basis. After it was returned to the house it bloomed to thank me.

I call this plant in my garden the September flower as it always blooms in September in SA just for two weeks, then nothing for the rest of the year. So it would be a spring flower - spring must be in the air around your place.

Usually it blooms around Christmas (hence the name, Christmas Cactus). Sometimes we get a second bloom around Easter. This one is obviously confused....it's blooming right in the middle.

Aww, at least yours is providing some visual pleasure, mine hasn't' bloomed since last spring. Probably it's on strike, though, for similar reasons. I do better watering my mom's plants which she probably doesn't even know she has than my own, even though mine has a lot of light now. I think I might be getting a little better in that it may be getting a bit of water every few weeks rather than the norm of monthly. No wonder it's on strike.

@Platespinner and I are sitting here laughing at your apt response. You obviously 'get' our post about the nerve of that plant to flower now, just as I was about to eliminate it.

@Morleyhunt Are you hanging out in the same room at present, or a bit ago? Sounds like fun. I got excited some months ago when I thought mine had a few new buds, but alas, once I started watering it again, it quit producing them as if it's nose was in the air for my neglect.

It does have some pretty blooms at the moment. That is the only reason it has been given a respite until the house officially changes hands....unless the new owner wants it.

There are plants indeed that wilt when the flowers also have wilted . But some would bloom one after another . And those are the plants we would like to have in gardens .

I'm not sure I want to give it a chance. I've already made an attempted rescue of its brothers and sisters and cousins and aunts and uncles and ......... How many can I possibly rescue?

We have rehomed as many as possible. I think anyone who ever knew my mother now owns at least one African violet. I can't keep all of them. It was time to put the rest of them out of their misery. This sporadic watering and the ultra low temperatures had already caused a number of them to expire voluntarily.
