More on the Running Front

March 3, 2016 9:03am CST
I wrote the other day about my running setback due to shin splints. Well, I'm feeling more discouraged. Two nights in a row I attempted to run again. Immediately, I felt a new pain in my hip/leg joint. Not sure where it came from, what caused it, what to do about it. I haven't had much time to research what it could be. It only hurts when I run. Not when I walk. Not when I sit. Not when I do yoga. The only thing I can think to attribute it to is that I started weight training again. I was attempting to push myself to heavier weights. So perhaps I pulled something then. Soooo.... now I feel like, perhaps I should back off on those weights too. I'm really discouraged by all the aches and pains. I'm only 46. I've always been fairly active and healthy. Even during the too-busy-having-babies stage, I was active just chasing them around playgrounds and stuff. And yes, I'm a little overweight, but I'm not a lot overweight. So I just don't understand. Anyway, I'm off to the gym in about 30 minutes to do yoga. I'll also attempt to run again & see what happens. In the meanwhile, I need to research what the heck I could do to help that odd ache. Anyone a big runner or weight trainer on here? Anyone have a clue as to what this ache could be that I'm experiencing?

You are still young, but do not overdo. I cannot lift weights after I had a problem to my right shoulder two years ago. Running is no more an option (I am 62), but I like to walk.

It sort of sounds like a stress injury to a muscle or ligament in the hip. That yoga stretch where you prop your foot on your knee (lying on your back) and pull the opposite leg toward the body helps a pain I get in my hip at times.

yes, i'll try that one. my husband said, "Sounds like you aren't stretching enough." And I'm saying, "I do yoga EVERY day! How can I not be stretching enough?" :-)

@JamesHxstatic I despise pigeon pose! Don't get me wrong. I do it nearly every day, but OUCH. I hate the way it feels. I have friends who LOVE it. I dread it. I figure my body must really need it since it hates it so much. ha ha.

@jillybean1222 The Pigeon pose is another really good hip stretch. It is best to get both hips on the floor if possible.

I have no idea what to tell you except to go and see your doctor who should be able to give you an answer as to what is going on.

@jillybean1222 I would think that would be the thing to do at least for a while in hopes it heals as it does get expensive to go to the doctor.

@enlightenedpsych2 a little better. i'm not running religiously, but getting to at least once a week. i'm not ready for the 5K, but i'm still doing it. i have increased my cardio though. so i do cardio at least 3 or 4 times a week on top of at least 6 days of yoga. so i know i'm improving.... just not enough time in the day to do all i would like to

sorry can't offer any advice as to what might be causing your pain. Maybe you should just stick to your walking & yoga for the time being and see if not running for a few days eases the pain

In Yoga some workouts should be avoid if you have pain. May be it comes after workout. I recommend the advise of both physical expert and doctor.

Sorry I can't help you. Hopefully it won't be just age or that would be very sad. More sad in some ways than just a pulled muscle or whatever.
