Steam Cleaning our Carpets

We have a light neutral green carpet here in Florida. We bought a new steam cleaner so that we can clean them ourselves. They really don't look dirty but I know they must be.
Well after doing half of the dining room I have to tell you, yes they were dirty. Yuck, the water certainly turned an ugly color gray!! We are now trying to dry them as quickly and thoroughly as possible. Here in Florida mold is always a consideration.
I will say the color looks a lot brighter now. I am very leased with the results. Do you clean your own carpets or hire a company to do it for you?

shockin', aint it? i'm always horrified when i clean mine these days. used to do such once a month, but've been most lax the past few years. with a hubs who'll not take off his boots't the door, the pup 'n a cat - a carpet cleaner's a necessity :D

As Yuki said, we have wall to wall carpet so we can't send it out but that would be a big advantage, no mess at home.

It did dry within 2 hours so that is quick enough, we will finish the rest of the house this weekend.

That's my plan for this afternoon, too. Our carpets are beige, and they're constantly a disaster thanks to the kids and their spills. I'm so glad I bought a steam cleaner a few years ago... while I like the results hiring professionals give, doing it myself saves us a lot of money. I've started using the LA's Totally Awesome cleaner instead of the normal carpet cleaning stuff. Love the results with that stuff!

We got the new Bissell Machine that does anti-bacteria cleaning as well so I used the cleaner provided at least this first time. So far it is pretty impressive.

We own a commercial size steam cleaner which we bought years ago when we used to clean the Fashion Bug stores in Michigan. Since then, we've used that same one in the homes of customers and our own house, but even though we own the darn thing we didn't clean the carpets as often as we could have. Now a part is broken, so it continue to sit in the garage awaiting the day when we'll have extra funds to hopefully get it fixed.
Since we've done carpets through the years, we've just gone ahead a rented the machines and then used that when doing our own or that of customers. It costs a tad more, but it's so much easier for me to manage.

@MarshaMusselman No I can well imagine. I was able to handle this one by myself when necessary so that is a big plus.

The Bissell Revolution ended up costing us $145 and did a great job so I feel it was money well spent.

@BelleStarr If we ever get another one, I'd buy a Bissell probably. For one thing they are easier to manage especially going up and down stairs. Whereas ours needed a person in the front to help lower the large machine step by step. Not fun.

We do our own cleaning of carpets. I used to rent the rug doctor several times a year. I saw that Sam's Club had a rug doctor last month and bought one, so now I can clean my carpets when ever I feel like it, without the hassle of having to go to the store and rent it and lug it back home and then lug it back to the store when done. Now I have no rush, if I only want to do 1 room I can and not have to worry about the expense of renting for just 1 room. It works great, glad I took the leap and bought it. Hope yours it still working out for you.

We are on our second carpet shampooer - but now we only have two area rugs, mostly hardwoods so it's not getting much use. One thing we found out when we had a house with a lot of wall to wall carpet - the more you clean them the faster they get dirty. I don't know why, but it does happen.

I have not found that to be the case with the steam cleaner but when I have ever used a spay spot carpet cleaner I noticed the spot attracted dirt.

@BelleStarr I think it might depend on the actual material of the carpet.

We have had no luck doing it ourselves. we pick up the phone. The carpet is in the family room and the dogs (grand-dogs) have made a mess of it. When they are better trained we ill pick up the phone....

lol Yes As I said I was very tempted to pick up the phone but since almost the entire house is carpet and we have no pets down here, it seemed more cost effective to do it ourselves and I am not crazy abut strangers in my bedroom.

It was completely dry in about 2.5 to 3 hours with having done the anti-septic cycle which is 3 passes. One pass dries in an hour. It is the Bissell Revolution and I am very impressed with the job it did.

We have rented in the past but in the long run found it less expensive to just own our own machine.

@BelleStarr That's my goal one day, though ideally I would like hardwood floors. I don't like carpets.

When we built this place we decided against carpets as we felt we'd bring quite a bit of dirt inside and I'd rather sweep it up than have it disappear into the carpet. And it was difficult to know where to 'stop' the carpet and start putting tiles where the kitchen and lounge blended. I'm glad you're pleased with the results.

The house had the carpeting when we bought it and it is in good shape so it is going to stay for now. I feel better now that it is clean.

I have hard wood floors through out our house. Sometimes I just want carpet. But I don't want to cover these floors as they are very old. I have a few smaller area rugs on the floors

I like hardwood floors but the home came with carpeting and since it is in good shape I can't justify changing it. Also as you can see, hubs likes to lay on the floor to watch TV. lol

fortunatley we do not have many carpets in our flat here in spain.... but we do our own ... we bought a second hand carpet ... and got it professionally cleaned before we put it in the flat ... and now we do it when we think it needs doing....
I should imagine its hard to dry a carpet in florida with all that humidity.....

At home wee have a combination but here it is all carpet except the bathrooms and kitchen. I have to admit I am not a fan of carpet in dining rooms.
