Controlled or out of Control Burning

Here in the heartland we have something called Cntrolled Burns. We also have burn bans, volunteer fire fighters and dry grass. Last Sunday during a burn ban a controlled burn got out of control and six area agencies had to respond to save the town from being overtaken by flames. Since then we have had some moisture, and the skylines are plumed in smoke. The cattle nearby keep on feeding and we breath the smell of burning wood. We were gone on errands and came home after dark. Fires on the skyline cast eerie shapes around and my heart beat faster. There were no instances of out of control for the rest of the week. and that is good. We have had more moisture, slowly settling down into the ground. It scrubs the acrid smell from the air. Burning of the prairies was done by the Native Americans long before we settled here. Then the practice went in and out of favor. This type of fire action actually does away with some unwanted growth. It causes certain seeds to split open and germinate. If we do not do this type of prescribed burning on purpose, nature, with lightning and storms and sparks from rock or metal hitting together will still have bonfires on the horizon. Sometimes when not expected, sometimes not in control.

The ones that were out and away from town were not too bad. In the dark they looked scary/awesome.

That must have been a bit frightening when that fire got out of control, and I'm glad that the town wasn't harmed.

We could not see the flames, but just the smoke rising up over the dam. There were some farm houses that got protected. The volunteer fire department stopped by the church and asked for us to pray as they were leaving. Kids at church were scared.

I know about controlled burns and uncontrolled burns. Our volunteer fire department has a dance every April at the Community Center and tickets are being sold as the businesses in the area and surrounding towns have donated items or money.

That sounds like an excellent fund raiser. Ours just had a pancake feed.

Our forefathers were smart and did things for a reason. We need to be good to the lands. Our good earth.

In the right place at the right time they are healthy and put needed nutrients back into the soil and clear out underbrush.

I have heard of controlled burns in the mountains; not around here. In the north of the province in the bush when fires are started by lightening they are often left to burn as nature intended.

Yes that is common if it is not a threat to lives and property.

It is a common agricultural process. All involved have to be careful, though.

The day the fire got loose a day when they were not supposed to burn. We were all glad that it got under control.

We have controlled burns here too and some people are very much against them. Some of them get out of control and can cause great damage.

People who want to do a burn are supposed to have it approved first so firefighters can be on standby.

@GardenGerty We have a controlled burning season too when you need a permit but there are also several months when you can burn without a permit.

When there has not been any rain or snow, they have to do it.
