I don 't like surprises...

'Don't cook dinner today' my husband said, 'we are going out'. When I asked 'where?' he said 'it's a secret.' It was a cold evening at the end of a very sad week. I did not want to go out, I did not feel sociable and I protested but he insisted. I got dressed up without any enthusiasm because I had a good idea where we were going and I suspected that it would make me feel worse rather than better. I was wrong about the destination as we headed beyond Athens, a 40 minute drive from home, and arrived at a close friend's house. She is a lovely lady who knew about my sad loss and I thought she was doing her best to cheer me up by inviting us for a meal. That turned out to be only partly true as two other couples arrived, but it was not until she brought out the champagne that I realized this was a birthday party for me!! My birthday is later this week but we were not able to meet up so she brought it forward and invited my guests!! It was a lovely evening, but I wished so much that my husband had told me in advance because I missed the additional pleasure of looking forward to it.

Sounds like a nice evening, but I would have wanted to know ahead of time, as you mentioned. I might want to wear something special.

I would have worn something different had I known and also different earrings. I would have 'glamed' up a bit more.

You missed the pleasure of looking forward the party, but I am sure you appreciated your husband effort to make you feel better for one day. Happy Birthday to you.

I did appreciate my husband's efforts and I learned that he can keep a secret if he has to. He likes surprises so I guess I should make some secret plans for him, now he would like that.

@41CombedaleRoad It's a good idea to plan a surprise for him. My husband is like me, we both do not like surprises.

I also don't like surprises but because I don't like being forced into the limelight. Last time someone tried to throw me a surprise party, I ran out the door and all the way home. It was miles.

Oh dear, you are worse than I am!! I suspect you were young if you ran all the way home.

Have you had a similar experience to mine? Most people love surprises so we are a little different. Maybe we just have not had enough of them to get used to the idea.

That's my reaction to surprise parties too - I'd much sooner know about it. Happy birthday.

Sounds like you had a great evening. Sometimes anticipation is better than a surprise.

In my case the reverse was true as the anticipation was not very encouraging.

I took me a little while to throw off the misgivings I had earlier but it was a very good evening and all the guests were lovely people.

Yes it is but it was taken a couple of years ago at another birthday, I knew this one was planned but had not expected balloons and all the trimmings. Hence the surprised face.

It depends on what the surprise is, no doubt many of us have experienced one or two that have not been entirely welcome.
