WHAT AVIAL IS?

AVIAL is a favorite dish of Kerala. It is made of all vegetables boiled in water and made into a semi -solid content in the presence of Curd. The vegetables include drumsticks, Carrot, Beans, Pumpkins, Coconut, Plantain, Brinjal and Cucumber. The Brinjal is not used in some states like Tamilnadu and Karnataka. In Kerala the Avial is prepared without Carrots and Beans. Some people skip using curd and substitute it with Tamarind. In Kerala the dish is prepared using coconut in rich quantity and refined coconut oil which is the main ingredient The dish is served hot and should be taken with rice. This is the best stuff that can replace Sambar, Dal and Rasam all in a row. One can not justify the dish if taken more than two times of serving. The curry leaves used in the dish give good smell and add flavor to the dish. The interesting part of this dish is that there is no need to use any side dish for Avial and can be consumed even without rice. But, sometimes it is preferred along with Rotis

Very interesting, It's similar to the Filipino "Pinakbet with Gata" ( Pinakbet in coconut milk) except ours have no carrots, beans or cucumber but has added ingredients, I'm curious how we Asians influence each other

This sounds interesting. I would be curious to try it but doubt it would be on my favorite dish list.

I too like avial. I have it with rice and chapati. It is a healthy dish. All vegetables are added in the curry and it is mixed to a coconut gravy .
