My Husband is Mentally Ill

You would think he would get help, but no, he thinks he is just fine. He calls his illness a hobby, but I don't. Every morning he leaves the house, alone. I refuse to go with him, because I don't want to catch his disease. His illness is going to antique shops and thrift shops. He enjoys discovering new ones every day. Everything in this photo came from one or the other, except for the chandelier. My problem and his is that we have no more room at all, but out he went again! I think he should open his own shop or enter the looney bin.

Although everything in your photo is really pretty I can certainly understand not having any room for anything else. I like your idea of your hubby opening his own shop

That is a dreadful disease as one will not know where to stop. My friend's husband was like that. I have now lost contact with them but I know he would just sit and calculate how much he would earn if he had an auction knowing fully well he would never sell. They almost became paupers.

@DianneN Yes you have thought correctly. These days I am just writing without thinking.

I think you mean paupers. Lol! I don't think that would happen to us, but if it did, we can auction off some of his finds. Lol!

We are two with the same problem Dianne. My husband is a fan of ancient books. We have so many that I have no more place where to store them. I told him many time to open an antique book shop.

@DianneN You guessed right, I told him that he has several that he bought in double and he could sell one copy. He is still thinking if it's a good idea.

Don't laugh, but he was talking about buying the unit next door and breaking through the wall to have more room! It will never happen!

Once upon a time I had this disease too. My house, however, was huge. It took me many years of wonderful and enjoyable hunting to decorate it just right. When it was finished, so way I.

This is just our vacation home. My home up north is huge, and he does the same shopping there. He has bought me so much silver, including silver pots and pans, that I have no room even in that home. I'm thinking of bringing half of it to a consignment shop.

@DianneN That sounds like a good idea. Make a little business out of it. That could become his new hobby.

Now, Dianne, there are a lot worse things he could be doing when he goes out alone.

It would be no problem if he just looked and didn't buy. Why don't you open a shop for him then he can buy to his hearts content or he runs out of money.

@DianneN Maybe your husband should open up two shops then. One up North and the other down South.

Lol! The only problem we have is room. You should see my other house. It's pathetic! He bought me beautiful silver pots and pans. I rarely cook anymore and have never used them. My own kids don't want that "junk" either.

Oops - I think I have that disease too! But I gotta have my limits - we sure don't have room for any of the big stuff. So, I just keep buying the little stuff !

Wow , that nook is beautilful . Look at that ornate console . And you said they were bought by your husband , who you said is mentally ill . Well, if all mentally ill are like that then it's okay, as long as he still has the budget for your foods .

I have a neighbor who went to work in an antique store after he retired. He keeps spending his paycheck on more and more antiques. Now his place is so full you can barely move around in it. He should start selling his furniture back to the antique store where he works! At least your husband has good taste! LOL

My husband won't work in any store, but he's worse than I am at shopping. You should see my other house! At least we have plenty of walking room, but don't open a cabinet!

i would say, it is a hobby however if it's causing clutter and is out of control then that's the time you can say that he is a certified hoarder, right? but I must say, that pic you post is beautiful..

Tell him to be careful or he could be on one of those episodes of Hoarders. LOL. I have a few clients that can't pass up a find. Other than suspending the finds from the ceiling I have no other idea of how to keep them out of the way.

@Juliaacv The secret is not to throw them away. They go dormant, but bloom again. I can't tell you how many I threw out because I thought I killed them!!!! Lol! Here are my brother's gorgeous orchids.
