Tram line closed due to derailment on train line

While out in the city centre today I noticed a message displayed on the Metrolink schedule board stating that the line between Whitefield and Bury was closed to a train derailment. This seemed very odd because the two services use separate tracks. Fortunately there was an inspector on duty at the station, so I asked him how a rail derailment could affect the tram service. Apparently the two lines are quite close to each other along that section, so I can only assume that the tram line has been closed in order to give access for emergency services and engineering crews.

@RussTeed It was a Saturday morning while travelling to work. We hit a car that had been dumped on the tracks and the impact ruptured the steam pipes around the engine. I ended up being taken back to the start of my journey, so I was quite late that day. I can still remember the impact and thinking that the train had been derailed.

I had no idea that the lines ran so closely until I saw a picture on the Manchester Evening News website.

These things do happen, but I could not figure out why a train line derailment should affect a tram line.

@maezee When I enquired it seems that the two lines are so close to each other along that stretch that trams would interfere with the rescue work.

@Asylum im not sure but there must be a good reason, why else would they interrupt the commute for so many people?

Do you use the tram service regularly? We had that in the city years ago but not any more. When I was on holiday in Australia we did not join the group for a particular sight seeing option but instead just spent the day relaxing in the hotel and that was the day we got into a tram, just travelled and got off at the last stop - an experience I will never forget.

@allknowing Not the trams in Manchester because they have doors that automatically lock.

@Asylum I think you can even jump in and out of a running tram.

There was no mention of fatalities on the news, so it seems as though nobody was hurt.

I checked online when I arrived home and was surprised to see that the tram line and rail line are only a few feet apart.

I am pretty sure that you are right about the reason they closed the line.

Good thing you replied to a response/comment on your own discussion, Barry, or I might have been derailed from alighting on one of your own discussions. This is the third time I've opened your page and finally landed on something by you. When you were late that one time from what happened with the car, your work hopefully understood as it could be proved if needed. Still, it's hard to make up for lost time when it wasn't your fault in the first place.

I take it the derailment didn't affect the services you use?

No, I use a different line, but I found it difficult to comprehend how a train derailment could affect a tram service.

This was on an alternate line to the one that I use, but the reason for disruption seemed so strange that I was compelled to enquire.
