It's A Little Windy!

Just over an hour ago the wind suddenly picked up. Wind is not unusual. In fact the wind rarely dies down completely. Looking out the window, in the last few minutes a very large pine tree came crashing to the ground. This is the pine tree my granddaughter had commented on a few weeks ago The carrots in the trees are now on the ground.
Three year olds can be exhausting. They have boundless energy, endless curiosity, and in Sandra's case a wonderful imagination. Yesterday she accompanied me...

What a shame, but I see that the tree has not very deep roots, at least it crashed on the ground and did not hit anything.

@Morleyhunt It is the same for the trees that are along the small river that runs on the side of our property. Two trees already crashed on the ground.

We are situated on a thin layer of soil over rock. Most root systems are not deep.

Oh my gosh, that was quite a tree! How sad that it's down. We had wind blowing all night long last night. It kept me awake for quite some time. But, thankfully, I didn't hear about any damage!

@CRK109 it is a lot of work and then you still have a yard that's a mess.

@Morleyhunt When I lived in CT, a hurricane brought down a huge cherry tree in our yard and friends came by with chainsaws to cut it up. It was an all day event. It's really not fun with those large trees come down.

yepperz, those 3 yrs olds can sure get those imaginations goin'. i don't reckon i've e'er seen pinecones that looked akin to carrots hangin' down 'round here. the pines back'n the hills though'd a diff'rent kinda texture, thin 'petals', pale'n color (compared to the ones here) 'n long. i'm presumin' that's the type ya got there?? what a pity that poor pine met its demise. thankfully it doesn't seem to've done much damage though. that's a good thingy. we're prone to winds here, high ones, 'tis 'breezy' here so far today, with the winds sustained't 25mph, with word 'tis gonna get worse's evenin' approaches. gonna be that way fer the entire week, says those weather folks. stay safe!

We are very close to Lake Erie. The winds run the length of the lake, so it can get pretty intense. I'm sure the water was over the boulevard in Fort Erie. Buffalo would also have experienced flooding because of the wind pushing the lake water. Lake Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes and as a result when there are strong winds from the east or west there is alway a fluctuation of the water levels at the ends of the lake.

@crazyhorseladycx its mostly the roads that are closed. You aren't allowed to build on 'flood plain" that's anywhere that has flooded in the last 100 years.

@Morleyhunt My relatives in Spokane Washington have been experiencing these kinds of winds for the past couple of years. Trees and power lines down. Pretty scary. We don't have those kinds of winds here in the Bay Area--at least not often.

@TheHorse we have had visitors who are shocked by the winds we experience regularly. This wind storm was a little more unexpected, I hadn't checked the forecast in the morning, but there had been no mention the night before.

@JamesHxstatic its fortunate that all the trees that have come down on their own have fallen in the spot where the arborist would have felled them.

We were fortunate that it didn't hit anything or anyone as it fell. The PSW commented that she will never forget the sucking sound the tree made as it tipped over beside her.

The wind is so strong! I wonder if the pine tree can still be rescued. Sometimes the trees in the park nearby my house fall down because of the storm as well, I always feel sad when seeing the trees down, especially big trees. It took them so long to grow until this big.

The tree cannot be saved. The roots were torn out of the ground. This afternoon my husband started the tedious job of cleaning up the mess.

Wow I am sorry you ost your tree. Three years ago when a hurricane struck our area I watch a huge oak tree uproot and fall in my backyard, it was mind-boggling.

That is sad but we see that often with pines, they don't send their roots far enough down to save them in a storm. I'm going to go and see whay there are carrots in your tree Can't find it, why are there carrots in your tree...

It has been very wet and now extremely windy. Two trees are down now. If the wind keeps up I expect a couple that are leaning are coming down next.

@Morleyhunt If you dry the pine for a year or so it's burns rather nicely, and smells wonderful.

We had a very windy night several weeks ago here in CT, USA. I lost a huge branch off my pine tree and one of my gutters is hanging off my roof. I really don't like wind. It can be so destructive.

We are accustomed to a lot of wind. This morning it sprung up quickly and unexpectedly. The wind just screamed around the house. We lost three trees in a short period of time. There are two more that are leaning enough that really they need to be taken down.
