South of the Border is located at the border of North and South Carolina. It has been providing a place for weary travelers to rest and refresh for more than 50 years. I personally have never stopped however I can't resist taking a picture of the big sombrero every time we drive by. It is "unique" is all I have to say. Do you have any "unique" attractions that you always notice but never visit?

Yes, a big hut shaped like an orange. I saw it in Kissimmee, we went many years, I saw the place every time we passed on that road and never stopped.

@Drosophila Yes it is a Durham suburb. Durham has a lovely art museum and lots of great food, they are very into the whole food truck thing. Duke University and the Duke family home are located there. It is a nice area.

I have actually stopped there twice. Once to see the place and just last January I stopped and picked up a geocache that was placed there just under the big sombrero! I had to chuckle at your photo! There are quite a few interesting restaurants, stores and colorful giant animals all over. It's fun!

@BelleStarr You usually have to make stops anyway, this was kind of a fun thing for me. Once I saw it, I was done until I noticed a geocache was placed there. Hence my second time in. We were always going to stop at Ruby Falls too, but never did.

@BelleStarr , that is unique! Love the sombrero. We have a house that has been built to look like a UFO in one of our suburbs we always ride past. I never remember to take a picture of it. Too busy gawking!

There are a bunch of casinos in our area and I've never been in any of them. I have been to Vagas and Reno and did go in several and even won money...

That place is a tacky tourist trap! We stop there only to use the restrooms if necessary. My parents brought us there when we were kids. Nothing's changed.

Hahaha! OMG - this makes me giggle because we have driven by this so many times when we drive down to Florida and I always want to stop in and take a peek but we never have. It also gets very built up because you see so many signs for it during the trip. It looks like it could be a fun place during the day but at night a bit creepy! :) Anyway, it was fun seeing this familiar site in your photo!

I know I started watching the signs about 50 miles away, every few miles they have a sign warning it is coming in only 40 miles, 25 miles, 6 miles lol

@BelleStarr I used to be able to count armadillo on the way to Florida after we got south of there, but now there are fences up, I suppose to protect them as well as to protect motorists. So now seeing those signs is my way of entertaining myself when we drive down! Also, there is that JR's place - Everything from brassieres to chandeliers! LOL! :D

We spent a night there once in the late 70s, on our way from Montreal to Florida. Unfortunately, it was a rushed visit as we arrived late and had to leave early the next day

I think that travel with children usually is that way, drive, stop, sleep repeat!! It is hard to miss that's for sure!!

@BelleStarr We were actually old enough to have enjoyed the trip, but sadly this was the year there was a massive snow storm in North Carolina, right around spring break. We got caught in a statewide emergency that closed all the roads, and had to be taken to emergency shelter. That kind of put us off our schedule, and my parents really pushed to get us to our destination. So no sight seeing along the way...

I generally don't pay much attention to the buildings we have, but I do recall many decades ago that there was a round house everyone was intrigued with. Rumor had it that it was haunted but now I can't even remember where that house is or was.

When Americans started taking to the roads after World War II many of these roadside attractions sprung up all over the country but few I think have survived.

There are a few places that we drive by occasionally and think that the next time we'll stop there. I think that we should all book a "next time" trip and get to those places!

You should stop at South of the Border at least once just to see what's there. I've been by it dozens of times and finally, about 12-15 years ago when the boys were still young enough to enjoy it, we stopped to check it out. It is a unique experience.
