Are You Really Going to Eat That?

Now just what is that cat going to eat?

My daughters were just saying that cats won't eat carrots, but I have known some felines to at least try them! My mother-in-law's cats were terribly spoiled with table scraps. They must have been related to Garfield, because spaghetti was one of their favourite dishes. And as she got older and indulged them more, they'd beg ice cream from her at bedtime every night. The oddest thing they ate, though, was citrus. I can remember one of them eating grapefruit segments. I've had several cats that had an addiction for green olives. One would roll the olives around on the floor like a toy, rubbing his head all over them and sucking the pimento out of the middle. It was almost like he was on catnip! Sometimes he'd eat the whole olive, but a lot of the time he just sucked at it and ate the pimento, leaving the crushed plaything discarded on the kitchen floor. Another cat had a fetish for dried tea bags. He'd break into the kitchen cabinet and knock the garbage bin over, just so he could play with them. He used the tea like catnip. He's eat a little, but mostly he'd just scatter it all over my carpet. I tried everything to keep him out of the garbage, but he was a very determined little kitty... What about you? What sorts of odd treats or foods do your cats like? If you don't have cats, maybe you have a friend or loved one whose cat eats bizarre foods.... [Photo by Henrik Veres/Pixabay, CC0]

Yeah, I don't suppose goldfish have much opportunity to eat weird foods, LOL! We tried to raise goldfish once. We got several of those really pretty ones with the fancy tails, and we put them into a nice aquarium with a filter and light. Sadly, they kept dying on us. At first I thought maybe it was something contaminating the tank or the water. But it turned out, those poor fancy fish were drowning! Apparently the ones with the big tails get caught up in the current produced by the motor attached to the filter. If they can't get out of that current, they will drown. We tried turning the setting down to the absolute lowest, but I guess the tank was too small to run the filter at all. Not with fancy goldfish, anyway...

@Ruby3881 It's funny how fishes can still drown. Goldfish are a bit challenging to keep as a pet.

@cherriefic I never realized just how true that could be! After all, everyone seems to have a little orange fish in a bowl. And you don't really hear too much about them being difficult to keep. Not like the tropical fish....

I've never actually had a cat, but my friend had one who liked apples. Yours sound entertaining.

Apples, you say? I think that's a first for me. I've loved all the cats I kept over the years. At the moment we have no pets, and I don't think that will change until we have a home with more space and a proper yard. I'd like to have budgies, and maybe a big dog to be a companion for my Bug.

@Ruby3881 Yes, that cat ate apples, but it had to be chopped up. We don't have any pets now either as our lifestyle wouldn't suit - we travel too much.

@jaboUK That's a riot, Janet! I wonder if he liked them with a little cinnamon and sugar? We don't travel at all, but it's definitely a lifestyle question here too. Just not enough space to adequately house pets. It wouldn't be fair to them.

Oliver likes black olive juice. He won't bother the olives, but wants the juice. I've had a few cantaloupe cats, but before I did I heard about them. Mekon, a beloved boy I had for far too short a time, liked cantaloupe, but he really liked cooked broccoli.

@Ruby3881 Mekon dragged it off a plate and growled when another cat looked his way. The other cats, however, were looking at him like he'd lost his mind.

I think one of mine ate steamed broccoli a few times too. We had assumed it was because of whatever was on the plate with it, but you never know....

My Mum's pet sheep would eat most kinds of fruit which isn't all that strange I guess. He would chew up plums and then carefully spit out the seed.

@Ruby3881 It's probably common enough for sheep kept in orchard-areas but not so where we were at the time.

You know, I have no idea what a typical sheep diet is supposed to be! I wonder if it's common for them to eat fruit? It's neat that he spit out the seeds.

Not really though my sister's cat will only eat the gravy from her wet catfood. She thinks that the cat may eat elsewhere as most of the neighbours have catflaps

@Ruby3881 She has one fussy cat. My sister has tried all brands and still the cat leaves it. Our cats had one type all their lives and no trouble!

@Auntylou I've had a little of both types. Many of my cats would eat just about anything put in front of them. But a few were very picky about brands, and would only eat the really expensive stuff.

Usually they gobble the wet food right up. I'll bet the cat is eating elsewhere...

@Ruby3881 A lot of the tenants in my building have cats, but they keep them pretty well inside. I see a lo of people walking their dogs, especially on the bike path

I'll bet that you have neighbours who have cats! I remember the West Island being a great place for both cat and dog lovers

Our cats only eat normal cat food - either dry or wet but still specifically cat food.

I remember that the cat of my grandmother loved lasagne and watermelon. I have no pets, the kitty of my neighbor comes often into my home and he loves black olives, not the green.

Just plain rice, or was it flavoured with something? They do put vegetables and grains in pet food, because when a carnivore hunts small prey like birds or mice in the wild, apparently they consume the stomach contents of that animal too. Depending on the diet of the prey, I guess a cat or dog would also be getting grains, seeds, berries, etc.

Oh boy can I relate @Ruby3881 . I had one that loved spaghetti. I would dangle it from my mouth and she would work her way up until I got a kiss. Some of the ones you've mentioned are pretty wild.
