“The British and Americans are two people separated by a common language.”
~ George Bernard Shaw
I was chatting away with a fellow mylotter about the appalling text speech that is taking over the modern language and killing all and any decent sentence or phrase not to mention conversations.
So would you say that it is "HARD work" to get it right?
or is Working at it just difficult?
you decide!
“I am reminded that while New Yorkers say "standing on line," the rest of the English-speaking world says "standing in line.”
~ Jeffrey Steingarten

The same has happened to the Spanish language that was introduced into South America by the conquistadors.
It is not only the construction of sentences and the spelling that Americans appear to have changed, they have also altered the pronunciation of many words by transferring the stress from one syllable to another.
This is why I would never buy a pet from New York zoo because the animals would not understand true English.

It is disturbing that people seem to be breaking all the rules because of texting. But! Can't fight progress!

@Inlemay - Let me rephrase and hopefully clarify what I meant. Long time ago certain English-speaking people used to use the word “ain't”. Long long time ago. But when I was growing up, in America, my English teachers constantly corrected me and told me that using the word “ain't” was improper English. So … though it pains me to think of it … “texting” might be the new “ain't”. It's really a painful thought. But it could happen.

I feel like there is a difference at least in the eay I use the terms. HARD work makes me feel like it is physically strenuous or difficult. On the other handI feel that if something is difficult - it seems to be more mentally challenging.

I meet quite a number of Americans and some are more difficult to understand than others. I have concluded that they have a wide range of accents depending on the State in which they live. Perhaps it is even as varied as the Irish, Welsh and Scottish accents. They are also hard to understand unless they are spoken slowly.
